SUMMARY:POSTER EXHIBITION: Art is a Weapon: Revolutionary and Antifascist Posters from Spain 1936-39
DESCRIPTION:Poster exhibition runs April 15 to June 20\, 2026.\nGongfu Bao Restaurant\, 365 Bank Street\nFree entry\nOrganized by the Education for Liberation Collective \nIn 1930s Spain\, artists\, organizers\, unions\, and leftist political parties produced thousands of stunning posters promoting revolutionary social change and opposing fascism. In 1936\, the Spanish Civil War began when fascists organized a coup to overthrow Spain’s democratically-elected leftist Popular Front government\, composed of a coalition of socialists\, anarchists\, communists\, workers’ organizations and social movements. From 1936-38\, thousands of international volunteers\, including at least 1500 Canadians\, went to Spain to join the Popular Front in the fight against fascism. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy enthusiastically supported the coup\, and the fascists ultimately won\, installing a dictatorship that would last until the late 1970s. \nArt is a Weapon: Revolutionary and Antifascist Posters from Spain 1936-39 presents reproductions of more than 25 striking posters that teach us the history of revolutionary Spain and the Spanish Civil War. But these posters are more than just artefacts of the past. They illuminate a history that extends into the present moment and to struggles we continue to fight today\, from opposing fascism\, fighting for gender liberation\, defending children’s genuine health and well-being\, and defending the dignity and well-being of working people to fighting for environmental sustainability\, for public education and art\, and supporting international solidarity. \nThe exhibition also includes reproductions of artefacts from the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion\, the Canadian contingent of the International Brigades that fought against fascism in Spain.\nCurated by Claire Nicolson-Hurtig (@encrenoire.illustration\, Posters for Palestine 2024 exhibition\, member of Education for Liberation Collective) \nPosters are reproduced from the collections of the Fundacion Pablo Iglesias (Madrid\, Spain)\, the Robert D. SUMMARY:Summertime Radical Historical Walking Tours
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa radicals have been fighting for greater social justice for more than 200 years. This summer you can learn more about past protests\, strikes\, and campaigns during a radical historical walking tour. \nMy name is Brian McDougall. Since 2014\, I’ve given hundreds of tours about Ottawa-Gatineau’s radical past for tourists\, residents\, and local activists. I believe that historically informed activists are more effective. \nWhy do we need to know our history? It’s true that history doesn’t repeat itself and can’t provide us with ready-made formulae to guide us today. But knowing how past generations of radicals fought for social justice – stories our rulers either rewrite or suppress – helps to sharpen our ability to think through the strategic and tactical issues we face today.  \nWhat kinds of struggles have Ottawa-Gatineau’s radicals mounted in the past? What strategies did they adopt? When did they win and why did they often lose? DESCRIPTION:This new book examines the threat of an emboldened right in Canada and delves deep into our local experience with the so-called “Freedom Convoy”\, while setting out strategies for resistance. Called “Confronting the Resurgent Right“\, the book offers a deep dive into the different currents and shared agenda of the right — and our collective experience to date and lessons to be learned in countering their strength. \nEdited by Miriam Edelson\, this collection of essays by academics and activists brings together personal histories and inter-sectional analysis to deepen our understanding of the peril and help build more inclusive and durable ways to challenge regressive forces that promote hate. \nSpeakers will include chapter contributors Alex Silas\, reflecting on the Battle of Billings Bridge; Emily Quaile\, talking about anti-fascist organizing and CSO’s defense of queer rights; Robert Fox\, on the Ottawa People’s Commission on the Convoy Occupation; and Miriam Edelson. Jackie Neapole\, who collaborated with Miriam on a chapter examining the neoliberal attack on the Canadian women’s movement\, will chair the session. There will also be time for questions\, discussion\, and reflection on next steps. Complimentary refreshments provided.

The long-time dictator Omar Al-Bashir had recently been overthrown after a 30-year regime marked by genocidal violence in Darfur. Meddeb began filming with young activists rallying for a citizen’s government by staging sit-ins\, making music\, reciting poetry\, and painting murals. Their hopes are expressed in signs that read “Sudan free from tribalism” and “religious pluralism.”\n \nFor Meddeb\, who has family roots in Tunisia\, Morocco\, and Algeria\, the movement brings to mind the aspirations of her late father: “the dream of an Arab country with its customs shaken up by a feminist revolution.” She captures demonstrations going late into the night with a celebratory atmosphere. SUMMARY:Ottawa Anarchist Bookfair 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa Anarchist Bookfair is run by a group of local anarchists and anarchic-organizers who are interested in cultivating a culture of autonomous and decentralized organizing in so-called ottawa. Our fair will have a mixture of literature (books\, zines\, etc.) relevant to anarchism/anti-oppression/organizing\, community-run workshops & skillshares\, and tabling from autonomous community groups and organizers. \nWe acknowledge that as settlers on these stolen\, unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe lands we represent part of the problem and are committed to operating in solidarity with Indigenous resistance and organizing however we can. Additionally\, we acknowledge the ways that power structures such as colonialism\, racism\, classism\, misogyny\, ableism\, and queerphobia replicate themselves both inside and outside of activist spaces. As a collective\, we aim to make this event as accessible as possible to those left behind by the state and mainstream society.
