SUMMARY:Confronting Hate: A conversation with Barbara Leimsner and Monia Mazigh
DESCRIPTION:How can we as individuals—and authors\, thinkers\, & advocates—keep each other hopeful and stand up collectively in the face of rising hate and Islamophobia in the world? \nJoin Octopus Books for a community conversation with Barbara Leimsner\, author of Quitting the Master Race\, and Monia Mazigh\, author of Gendered Islamophobia. \nTuesday\, April 23\, 7pm – 8:30pm. Doors open at 6:30pm.\nWoodside Hall\, Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre\n355 Cooper St\, Ottawa\nRefreshments provided.\nRSVP for this free event at https://octopusbooks.ca/events/33777 \nIn Quitting the Master Race\, Barbara Leimsner confronts the past to discover how one ordinary man—her adored German papa—became thoroughly indoctrinated with Nazi ideology during the Hitler years. As she weaves together the roots of her shameful inheritance\, she also discovers deeper truths about herself—and the cure for hate. This thoughtful\, compelling story examines the ever-present threat of racism and far-right ideologies\, as well as issues of inter-generational memory\, identity\, and trauma. \nIn Gendered Islamophobia\, Monia Mazigh describes the struggles faced daily by hijab-wearing Muslim women in Canada\, and the assumptions and prejudices which confront them daily in the streets\, workplaces\, universities\, and the media. \nThe facilitator for the event will be Kevin Skerrett\, Adjunct Research Professor in the Institute of Political Economy at Carleton University and former Senior Research Officer for CUPE. \nPart of the Authors Unbound literary event series.

SUMMARY:Queer Death Salon - When abusers and jerks die
DESCRIPTION:This is a facilitated drop-in discussion space\, with the purpose of building connection\, skill\, and resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ people navigating end of life in our personal lives and in our communities. \nWe are all present as community members and participants to discussion and resource sharing.
