SUMMARY:Learn about Ottawa’s radical history on a walking tour
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Ottawa’s radical history on a walking tour \nTake your radicalism outdoors this summer so you and your friends can learn from previous generations of troublemakers on a radical historical walking tour. \nMy name is Brian McDougall. Since 2014\, I’ve given hundreds of radical tours to visitors\, residents\, and local activists. \nWhy do we need to know our history? It’s true that history doesn’t repeat itself\, and it can’t provide us with ready-made formulae to guide us today. But\, knowing the inspiring stories about how others fought for social justice – whether they won or lost – helps to sharpen our ability to think through the strategic and tactical issues we face today. \nPeoples’ History Walking Tours: \n\nBuilding the Rideau Canal and the making of the Ottawa working class\nProtest\, strike\, and rebellion in the history of Canada’s capital\nAn unauthorized history of Parliament Hill: From Indigenous land to headquarters of Canada’s elite\nIndigenous peoples and colonialism in the history of Canada’s capital\nFrom sacred site to industrial wasteland: colonialism and class struggle in the Chaudière District\nMore than taverns and brothels: French Canadian\, Irish\, and Jewish struggles against oppression in Lowertown\nThe rise and fall of federal public service militancy in Ottawa-Gatineau\, 1965-2023\nColonialism and resistance in Canada’s capital: lessons from Indigenous\, Irish\, Black South African\, and Palestinian struggles\nFailure to revolt? Why Winnipeg had a general strike in 1919 while Ottawa’s was aborted\n\nHow good are the tours? In 85 reviews on Trip Advisor\, 79 tour participants rated their experience 5 stars out of 5. You can read their comments here: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g155004-d7035441-Reviews-Peoples_History_Walking_Tours-Ottawa_Ontario.html \nWhat does a tour involve? Tours are given in English\, last from 3 to 3.5 hours\, and mainly take place in the center of Ottawa\, May to October. \nWho leads the tours? I do. I’m a former university teacher and federal public servant\, land long-time socialist\, trade unionist and social justice activist in Ottawa-Gatineau. I’m currently active with the Palestinian solidarity caucus and the national education committee of my public service union: the Canadian Association of Professional Employees. \nHow much does a tour cost? Tours cost $35 per person and require a minimum of four participants. Groups can be as large as 20\, with those of 10 or more eligible for a discount. \nHow do you book a tour? Organize a group and select a preferred day and time. (Tours are organized on demand.) Then send me an email brian.phwt@gmail.com or book through my website https://ottawahistorytours.com Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

SUMMARY:National rally to end corporate abuse
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, Canadian companies have been linked to widespread violations of human rights\, workers’ rights\, and serious environmental destruction throughout their global operations and supply chains. \nWorkers and communities around the world have called on the Canadian government to hold our companies accountable. But Canada is dragging its feet. \nIn this “hinge” moment\, Canada can chart a new course: rebalancing unchecked corporate power with new rules that require companies to listen to workers and communities\, prevent harms before they occur\, and provide long-awaited justice to people who have been harmed. A growing number of countries around the world have adopted\, or are considering\, legislation that does just this. \nOn Friday\, September 26\, at 12pm\, please join us on Parliament Hill in Ottawa as we rally in solidarity with impacted communities around the world to change the systems that enable corporate impunity. \nWe will deliver to the government over 40\,000 signed action cards calling for Canada to introduce comprehensive legislation that ensures Canadian companies respect human rights and the environment globally. An interactive art installation will highlight the urgent need for action in Canada while celebrating bonds of global solidarity and years of grassroots mobilization by Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

SUMMARY:Steps Toward Reconciliation: A7G Walking Tour of Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:This guided walk\, led by Assembly of Seven Generations (A7G)\, follows a route through downtown Ottawa that highlights how non-Indigenous people and the federal government have shaped residential school policy and colonial legacies. At each stop\, we connect historical truths with the work of addressing ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous peoples today. \nEveryone is welcome\, those who are Gathering attendees as well as the wider community. \nWhy this during Resource Movement’s National Gathering?\nWe want the Gathering to begin by grounding ourselves in history and responsibility on unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe territory. \nRoute & pace\nApproximately 2km on city sidewalks at a relaxed group pace\, with several short stops for stories and discussion. Begins near First Nations Child & Family Caring Society on Sparks St. and concludes at Adaawewigamig (ByWard Market).

SUMMARY:Information for the people
DESCRIPTION:When institutions like government departments\, municipalities\, and universities make decisions\, the public in whose name those decisions are made are often left in the dark about *why* and *how* they were made. Researchers\, journalists\, and activists who want to shed light on the operations of public institutions have to rely on federal and provincial legislation allowing them to request access to documents. \nIn this workshop\, hosted by Science for the People Ottawa and Carleton PIRG\, participants will learn how the access to information / freedom of information systems in different Canadian jurisdictions work (or don’t!) and will be guided through the process of submitting their own requests for documents. \nBring a laptop\, ideas for documents you’re interested in requesting from public institutions\, and a credit card (for application fees\, usually $5 per request) if you’d like to put what you learn right into practice! \n🗓️ Friday\, 26 September\, 5:00 pm\n📍Loeb A220\, Carleton University
