SUMMARY:POSTER EXHIBITION: Art is a Weapon: Revolutionary and Antifascist Posters from Spain 1936-39
DESCRIPTION:Poster exhibition runs April 15 to June 20\, 2026.\nGongfu Bao Restaurant\, 365 Bank Street\nFree entry\nOrganized by the Education for Liberation Collective \nIn 1930s Spain\, artists\, organizers\, unions\, and leftist political parties produced thousands of stunning posters promoting revolutionary social change and opposing fascism. In 1936\, the Spanish Civil War began when fascists organized a coup to overthrow Spain’s democratically-elected leftist Popular Front government\, composed of a coalition of socialists\, anarchists\, communists\, workers’ organizations and social movements. From 1936-38\, thousands of international volunteers\, including at least 1500 Canadians\, went to Spain to join the Popular Front in the fight against fascism. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy enthusiastically supported the coup\, and the fascists ultimately won\, installing a dictatorship that would last until the late 1970s. \nArt is a Weapon: Revolutionary and Antifascist Posters from Spain 1936-39 presents reproductions of more than 25 striking posters that teach us the history of revolutionary Spain and the Spanish Civil War. But these posters are more than just artefacts of the past. They illuminate a history that extends into the present moment and to struggles we continue to fight today\, from opposing fascism\, fighting for gender liberation\, defending children’s genuine health and well-being\, and defending the dignity and well-being of working people to fighting for environmental sustainability\, for public education and art\, and supporting international solidarity. \nThe exhibition also includes reproductions of artefacts from the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion\, the Canadian contingent of the International Brigades that fought against fascism in Spain.\nCurated by Claire Nicolson-Hurtig (@encrenoire.illustration\, Posters for Palestine 2024 exhibition\, member of Education for Liberation Collective) \nPosters are reproduced from the collections of the Fundacion Pablo Iglesias (Madrid\, Spain)\, the Robert D. Farber University Archives and Special Collections of Brandeis University (USA)\, and the Centre de Recursos per Aprenentatge i la Investigació at the University of Barcelona (Spain).

SUMMARY:Summertime Radical Historical Walking Tours
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa radicals have been fighting for greater social justice for more than 200 years. This summer you can learn more about past protests\, strikes\, and campaigns during a radical historical walking tour. \nMy name is Brian McDougall. Since 2014\, I’ve given hundreds of tours about Ottawa-Gatineau’s radical past for tourists\, residents\, and local activists. I believe that historically informed activists are more effective. \nWhy do we need to know our history? It’s true that history doesn’t repeat itself and can’t provide us with ready-made formulae to guide us today. But knowing how past generations of radicals fought for social justice – stories our rulers either rewrite or suppress – helps to sharpen our ability to think through the strategic and tactical issues we face today. \nWhat kinds of struggles have Ottawa-Gatineau’s radicals mounted in the past? What strategies did they adopt? When did they win and why did they often lose? Those are some of the questions I pose while doing the nine tours offered through Peoples’ History Walking Tours. \nCurrent tours:\n•	Building the Rideau Canal and the making of the Ottawa working class\n•	Protest\, strike\, and rebellion in the history of Canada’s capital\n•	An unauthorized history of Parliament Hill: From Indigenous land to headquarters of Canada’s elite\n•	Indigenous peoples and colonialism in the history of Canada’s capital\n•	From sacred site to industrial wasteland: colonialism and class struggle in the Chaudière District\n•	More than taverns and brothels: French Canadian\, Irish\, and Jewish struggles against oppression in Lowertown\n•	The rise and fall of federal public service militancy in Ottawa-Gatineau\, 1965-2023\n•	Colonialism and resistance in Canada’s capital: lessons from Indigenous\, Irish\, Black South African\, and Palestinian struggles\n•	Failure to revolt? Why Winnipeg had a general strike in 1919 while Ottawa’s was aborted \nHow good are the tours? In 85 reviews on Trip Advisor\, 79 tour participants rated their experience 5 stars out of 5. You can read their comments here: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g155004-d7035441-Reviews-Peoples_History_Walking_Tours-Ottawa_Ontario.html \nWhat does a tour involve? Tours are given in English\, last from 3 to 3.5 hours\, and take place in the center of Ottawa\, May through September. Tours are organized on demand\, for four or more people. \nWho leads the tours? I do. I’m a former university teacher and federal public servant\, long-time socialist\, trade unionist\, and social justice activist in Ottawa-Gatineau. I’m currently active in my trade union\, the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (Palestine solidarity caucus and the National Education Committee) and with the Tempest Collective – an American/Canadian socialist group. \nHow much does a tour cost? Tours cost $35 per person and require a minimum of four participants. Groups can be as large as 20\, with those of 10 or more eligible for a discount. \nHow do you book a tour? Organize a group and select a preferred day and time. (Tours are organized on demand.) Then send me an email brian.phwt@gmail.com or book through my website https://ottawahistorytours.com \nDon’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or want to book a tour.

SUMMARY:Film and Panel - Collaboration with CoSA and OTJC
DESCRIPTION:Film screening and panel discussion hosted by Circles of Support and Accountability Ottawa and the Ottawa Transformative Justice Collective. \n\n\n\n\nThe film: Facing Our Messy Lives (2024) – The CoSA Ottawa Documentary \nFacing Our Messy Lives – This 61 minute film offers a rare and thoughtful look at how community-based reintegration works for people returning to society after serving sentences for sexual offences. It challenges assumptions\, reduces stigma\, and highlights what truly makes communities safer. \nThis documentary explores the Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) model — an evidence-informed approach that combines community volunteers with professional guidance to support individuals at high risk of reoffending \nThrough interviews\, real stories\, and community perspectives\, the film demonstrates: \n\nHow isolation and stigma increase riskHow structured support and accountability reduce harm\nThe courage of volunteers who step forward to build safer communities\nWhy prevention is everyone’s responsibility\n\nCoSA has been shown to reduce reoffending by up to 88%\, making it one of the most effective community-based reintegration models available. \nAbout Circles of Support and Accountability Ottawa (CoSA Ottawa) \nCoSA is a reintegration program inspired by restorative justice principles that reduce victimization by assisting people who have committed sexual offences to lead a responsible\, constructive\, and accountable life in our community. \nEver since CoSA was formed by a dedicated group of volunteers in 1994 in Hamilton\, Ontario\, CoSA has had one primary goal: No More Victims. Circles of Support and Accountability is the only community-based organization offering this service. \nOver the years\, CoSA sites across Canada have assisted thousands of recently incarcerated people\, referred to as Core Members\, who voluntarily seek CoSA’s help to learn to stop the cycle of harm and to establish a place in society. \nAbout the Panel: \n\nThe panel will bring together people of diverse perspectives who are involved with CoSA in a variety of contexts\, including a volunteer\, a Core Member of CoSA\, and a survivor.\nCoSA’s Core Members are recently incarcerated people who voluntarily seek CoSA’s help to learn to stop the cycle of harm and to establish a place in society. A Core Member of CoSA will appear on our panel anonymously via Zoom.\n\nWeekend parking is available in the lot behind the HeartWood House building.
