Lest we forget: An exploration of the valour and unequal treatment of Algonquin who have served with Canada’s Armed Forces

The Historical Society of Ottawa Virtual Speakers Series

Wendy Jocko’s uncle and 4 great uncles served in WWI and her father and 5 uncles served in WWII.
Wendy served for 23 years, including tours of duty in Bosnia and Croatia.
Wendy’s son served in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment.

In Lynn Gehl’s book “Joseph Gagnon: An Algonquin World War I Veteran”, she recounts the story of her great-grandfather who, in exchange for his wartime service and sacrifices, found himself stripped of his rights as an Indigenous person, yet denied the rights accorded non-Indigenous veterans.
