SUMMARY:Film and Panel - Collaboration with CoSA and OTJC
DESCRIPTION:Film screening and panel discussion hosted by Circles of Support and Accountability Ottawa and the Ottawa Transformative Justice Collective. \n\n\n\n\nThe film: Facing Our Messy Lives (2024) – The CoSA Ottawa Documentary \nFacing Our Messy Lives – This 61 minute film offers a rare and thoughtful look at how community-based reintegration works for people returning to society after serving sentences for sexual offences. It challenges assumptions\, reduces stigma\, and highlights what truly makes communities safer. \nThis documentary explores the Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) model — an evidence-informed approach that combines community volunteers with professional guidance to support individuals at high risk of reoffending \nThrough interviews\, real stories\, and community perspectives\, the film demonstrates: \n\nHow isolation and stigma increase riskHow structured support and accountability reduce harm\nThe courage of volunteers who step forward to build safer communities\nWhy prevention is everyone’s responsibility\n\nCoSA has been shown to reduce reoffending by up to 88%\, making it one of the most effective community-based reintegration models available. \nAbout Circles of Support and Accountability Ottawa (CoSA Ottawa) \nCoSA is a reintegration program inspired by restorative justice principles that reduce victimization by assisting people who have committed sexual offences to lead a responsible\, constructive\, and accountable life in our community. \nEver since CoSA was formed by a dedicated group of volunteers in 1994 in Hamilton\, Ontario\, CoSA has had one primary goal: No More Victims. Circles of Support and Accountability is the only community-based organization offering this service. \nOver the years\, CoSA sites across Canada have assisted thousands of recently incarcerated people\, referred to as Core Members\, who voluntarily seek CoSA’s help to learn to stop the cycle of harm and to establish a place in society. \nAbout the Panel: \n\nThe panel will bring together people of diverse perspectives who are involved with CoSA in a variety of contexts\, including a volunteer\, a Core Member of CoSA\, and a survivor.\nCoSA’s Core Members are recently incarcerated people who voluntarily seek CoSA’s help to learn to stop the cycle of harm and to establish a place in society. A Core Member of CoSA will appear on our panel anonymously via Zoom.\n\nWeekend parking is available in the lot behind the HeartWood House building. Street parking in the neighbourhood is free for 3 hours.

SUMMARY:"Confronting the Resurgent Right" book launch
DESCRIPTION:This new book examines the threat of an emboldened right in Canada and delves deep into our local experience with the so-called “Freedom Convoy”\, while setting out strategies for resistance. Called “Confronting the Resurgent Right“\, the book offers a deep dive into the different currents and shared agenda of the right — and our collective experience to date and lessons to be learned in countering their strength. \nEdited by Miriam Edelson\, this collection of essays by academics and activists brings together personal histories and inter-sectional analysis to deepen our understanding of the peril and help build more inclusive and durable ways to challenge regressive forces that promote hate. \nSpeakers will include chapter contributors Alex Silas\, reflecting on the Battle of Billings Bridge; Emily Quaile\, talking about anti-fascist organizing and CSO’s defense of queer rights; Robert Fox\, on the Ottawa People’s Commission on the Convoy Occupation; and Miriam Edelson. Jackie Neapole\, who collaborated with Miriam on a chapter examining the neoliberal attack on the Canadian women’s movement\, will chair the session. There will also be time for questions\, discussion\, and reflection on next steps. Complimentary refreshments provided.

SUMMARY:Shut Down CANSEC
DESCRIPTION:The Shut Down CANSEC campaign is calling for 1\,000 PROTESTORS to stand up against a global trade show of genocide\, occupation\, destruction and theft of land. \nMake arrangements now to join us in Ottawa to stop the genocidal supply chain and demand to SHUT DOWN CANSEC. As we approach 1\,000 days of genocide\, we cannot continue to allow companies to conduct business as usual. Stand up against the companies and elected leaders at CANSEC who are there for one thing: to defend an industry of genocide. \nCANSEC is an annual weapons trade show that has taken place in Ottawa since 1989 as ARMX and as CANSEC since 1998. CANSEC is promoted as “Canada’s leading defence\, security and emerging technology event” when in reality\, it is a marketplace for mass death. The companies invited to this event fuel genocide\, occupation\, theft and destruction of land from Palestine to Lebanon\, Iran\, Yemen\, Sudan\, Congo\, the Philippines\, and Wet’suwet’en territory. \nIt is through international deals and partnerships that take place at events like CANSEC that the Zionist entity is able to continue attacking Palestine\, Lebanon\, Iran\, Syria\, and Yemen. Take action\, Join us now!

SUMMARY:Against Canadian Imperialism: Uniting for Socialism
DESCRIPTION:On May 26th\, 2026\, the International League of People’s Struggle in Canada will host a national political conference titled Against Canadian Imperialism: Uniting for Socialism in Ottawa\, on the first day of its 6th National Assembly. It will be followed by the participants joining the protests against CANSEC (arms and weapons convention/trade show) and Community Caucuses in Ottawa over the next two days to build a strong united front against our common enemy. The aim of the conference is to unite people’s struggle across Canada and build common lines of action and concrete solidarity. There will be speakers\, organizing\, and people participating from other cities to Ottawa and it will be an opportunity to energize the anti-imperialist movement across Canada. \nYou can register here: https://bit.ly/4uY5TAw \nYou can reach out to ilps.canada@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you want to provide any support\, for example\, funds\, volunteering time\, etc. \nMore information: \n6th National Assembly of the International League of Peoples struggle and conference “Against Canadian Imperialism: Uniting Toward Socialism” will take place from May 26 – May 28th in Ottawa\, ON. The conference aims to strengthen unity among people’s movements across the country and deepen our collective understanding of Canada’s role in the global imperialist system. \nThrough plenary discussions the conference will center the current conditions and struggles of people and movements within Canada. It will aim to highlight the urgency of building solidarity among workers\, migrant workers\, Indigenous peoples\, students\, and communities resisting exploitation and impact of the Canadian project of profit over people. The conference will bring together grassroots organizations\, labour organizers\, neighbourhood defence groups and unions\, and individuals committed to fighting for a better future for all. Discussions will focus on the material impacts of Canadian imperialism at home – the exploitative working conditions\, the unaffordable cost of living\, the exploitation of migrant workers\, the housing system\, and the erosion of dignity of life for the working class. \nAt the same time\, it will expose Canada’s imperialist role abroad through its military alliances\, weapons trade\, and political and economic support for fascist\, Zionist\, and reactionary regimes worldwide. \nTherefore\, with the foundation of the working class struggle\, the conference seeks to advance a unified movement against Canadian imperialism and to build stronger international solidarity with people everywhere resisting the same global system of oppression. \nPlease register and pay a registration fee of $100 CAD to receive an email detailing the address for the events and further details on the program. \nThe registration fee will include food\, drinks and cover expenses for the venue during the 3 day conference and assembly. The registration fee does not include accommodation and transportation expenses. E-transfers can be sent to ilps.canada@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Planning to Be Good to Each Other - A Discussion on Preventing Harm by Building Infrastructure in Movements
DESCRIPTION:Powerful and profound work continues to be done on how to respond interpersonal harm within social justice groups after it happens. All Ottawa-area organizers and activists are invited to a discussion facilitated by the Punch Up Collective exploring this idea. \nThis event is for anyone interested in building social justice groups that are less hospitable to interpersonal harm and more generative of trust\, intentionality\, and effectiveness. SUMMARY:Arab Youth Social Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a social gathering of community and culture for Arab youth on Sunday\, May 3rd from 3 PM to 7 PM at Mirage Cafe. \nAll profits from ticket sales will go directly to supporting displaced Gazzawi families right here in our city. \nThe past two years have shown that our effectiveness as a movement comes down to our unity as a community. It’s because we are a community that we’ve mobilized mass actions\, organized arms embargo campaigns\, and fundraised thousands of dollars for Gaza. \nThis evening gathers Arab youth together through trivia\, live performances\, food\, and tarneeb competitions! Food will be catered by local Gazzawi businesses (shisha available for purchase after 5:30 PM). \nInfo and tickets: https://www.simpletix.com/e/darna-arab-youth-social-gathering-tickets-269819
