DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa Anarchist Bookfair is run by a group of local anarchists and anarchic-organizers who are interested in cultivating a culture of autonomous and decentralized organizing in so-called ottawa. Our fair will have a mixture of literature (books\, zines\, etc.) relevant to anarchism/anti-oppression/organizing\, community-run workshops & skillshares\, and tabling from autonomous community groups and organizers. \nWe acknowledge that as settlers on these stolen\, unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe lands we represent part of the problem and are committed to operating in solidarity with Indigenous resistance and organizing however we can. Additionally\, we acknowledge the ways that power structures such as colonialism\, racism\, classism\, misogyny\, ableism\, and queerphobia replicate themselves both inside and outside of activist spaces. As a collective\, we aim to make this event as accessible as possible to those left behind by the state and mainstream society. Alex will be joined in conversation by Kelly Bronson from the University of Ottawa. \nSocial Innovation Atelier\, 95 Clegg St.\nDoors open at 6:30pm\, program begins at 7pm. \nIs artificial intelligence going to take over the world? Have big tech scientists created an artificial lifeform that can think on its own? Is it going to put authors\, artists\, and others out of business? Are we about to enter an age where computers are better than humans at everything? \nThe answer to these questions\, linguist Emily M. Bender and sociologist Alex Hanna make clear\, is “no\,” “they wish\,” “LOL\,” and “definitely not.” This kind of thinking is a symptom of a phenomenon known as “AI hype.” Hype looks and smells fishy: It twists words and helps the rich get richer by justifying data theft\, motivating surveillance capitalism\, and devaluing human creativity in order to replace meaningful work with jobs that treat people like machines. \nIn The AI Con\, Bender and Hanna offer a sharp\, witty\, and wide-ranging take-down of AI hype across its many forms. They show you how to spot AI hype\, how to deconstruct it\, and how to expose the power grabs it aims to hide. Armed with these tools\, you will be prepared to push back against AI hype at work\, as a consumer in the marketplace\, as a skeptical newsreader\, and as a citizen holding policymakers to account. Together\, Bender and Hanna expose AI hype for what it is: a mask for Big Tech’s drive for profit\, with little concern for who it affects. \nDr. Alex Hanna is the Director of Research at the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR). Her work examines how new computational technologies—such as AI and machine learning—exacerbate racial\, gender\, and class inequality through their data practices and effects on labor. She also works in the area of social movements\, focusing on the dynamics of anti-racist campus protest in the US and Canada. \nDr. Kelly Bronson is a Faculty member at the Centre for Law\, Technology\, and Society\, the Canada Research Chair in Science and Society\, and an Associate Professor at the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences\, University of Ottawa. This talk highlights historical\, cultural\, and speculative themes readers can explore when engaging with this book and others by Indigenous authors. \nWaubgeshig Rice is an author and journalist from Wasauksing First Nation on Georgian Bay. His breakthrough novel Moon of the Crusted Snow was published in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim. Its sequel\, Moon of the Turning Leaves\, was published in 2023 and became an instant bestseller. His short stories and essays have been published in numerous anthologies.

The long-time dictator Omar Al-Bashir had recently been overthrown after a 30-year regime marked by genocidal violence in Darfur. Meddeb began filming with young activists rallying for a citizen’s government by staging sit-ins\, making music\, reciting poetry\, and painting murals. Their hopes are expressed in signs that read “Sudan free from tribalism” and “religious pluralism.”\n \nFor Meddeb\, who has family roots in Tunisia\, Morocco\, and Algeria\, the movement brings to mind the aspirations of her late father: “the dream of an Arab country with its customs shaken up by a feminist revolution.” She captures demonstrations going late into the night with a celebratory atmosphere. The activists are defiant against backlash. “Bullets don’t kill\,” says one young man. “What kills is people’s silence.”\n \nSudan\, remember us enshrines this moment\, but also documents the descent into war that followed. Today\, Sudan is engulfed in violence between internal factions in collusion with external arms suppliers driven to gain control over the country’s wealth of minerals.

It challenges assumptions\, reduces stigma\, and highlights what truly makes communities safer. \nThis documentary explores the Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) model — an evidence-informed approach that combines community volunteers with professional guidance to support individuals at high risk of reoffending \nThrough interviews\, real stories\, and community perspectives\, the film demonstrates: \n\nHow isolation and stigma increase riskHow structured support and accountability reduce harm\nThe courage of volunteers who step forward to build safer communities\nWhy prevention is everyone’s responsibility\n\nCoSA has been shown to reduce reoffending by up to 88%\, making it one of the most effective community-based reintegration models available. \nAbout Circles of Support and Accountability Ottawa (CoSA Ottawa) \nCoSA is a reintegration program inspired by restorative justice principles that reduce victimization by assisting people who have committed sexual offences to lead a responsible\, constructive\, and accountable life in our community. \nEver since CoSA was formed by a dedicated group of volunteers in 1994 in Hamilton\, Ontario\, CoSA has had one primary goal: No More Victims. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a free screening of short documentary\, IXIM (el amor no tiene género).\n\nIXIM (el amor no tiene género) (“Love has no gender”) follows Mónica Chub Caal\, a Maya Qʼeqchiʼ trans woman and activist\, and her struggle for inclusion and recognition in her Indigenous community and across Guatemala.\n\nMaya Mam film director\, Alex PV\, takes viewers along as he meets Mónica\, intertwining the activist’s personal story with the rich cultural heritage of her ancestors. “Ixim\,” which means corn in Maya\, highlights how this essential grain nourishes bodies\, traditions and entire communities.\n\nThe film is in Spanish and Qʼeqchiʼ\, with English subtitles.\nThe film lasts about 35 minutes.\nA discussion with Alex PV and Mónica Chub will follow the screening. There will be live English-Spanish interpretation throughout the discussion.\n\nAbout Inter Pares:\nInter Pares works with local organizations in Canada and around the world to address injustice and inequality. Called “Confronting the Resurgent Right“\, the book offers a deep dive into the different currents and shared agenda of the right — and our collective experience to date and lessons to be learned in countering their strength. \nEdited by Miriam Edelson\, this collection of essays by academics and activists brings together personal histories and inter-sectional analysis to deepen our understanding of the peril and help build more inclusive and durable ways to challenge regressive forces that promote hate. \nSpeakers will include chapter contributors Alex Silas\, reflecting on the Battle of Billings Bridge; Emily Quaile\, talking about anti-fascist organizing and CSO’s defense of queer rights; Robert Fox\, on the Ottawa People’s Commission on the Convoy Occupation; and Miriam Edelson. We will then move to the present moment\, imagining what we can access today to continue their memory. What new webs can be built? How can you continue to honor their life? How would they want you to live? Attendees will then break into smaller groups to share their grief and imaginings together. \nThis workshop is in memory of Tobie’s soul dog\, Peach (Petey) \nTobie (they/them/iel) is a white settler located in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). They are a disabled coach\, facilitator\, weaver\, builder\, caregiver and disruptor with mutual aid\, animals\, the outdoors and art at the center of their life. SUMMARY:Planning to Be Good to Each Other - A Discussion on Preventing Harm by Building Infrastructure in Movements
DESCRIPTION:Powerful and profound work continues to be done on how to respond interpersonal harm within social justice groups after it happens. But are there things we can do to create an environment within our organizations that limits the likelihood of harm occurring in the first place? All Ottawa-area organizers and activists are invited to a discussion facilitated by the Punch Up Collective exploring this idea. \nThis event is for anyone interested in building social justice groups that are less hospitable to interpersonal harm and more generative of trust\, intentionality\, and effectiveness. We will present our recent Briarpatch article “Planning to Be Good to Each Other” and facilitate a discussion about infrastructures and practices that might help prevent harm. \nContent Warning: This event will involve a facilitated discussion about preventing harm withing social justice groups. While the intention is not to focus on specific harmful events or behaviours as part of the event\, participants should be aware that issues of harm and trauma\, in a variety of forms\, may be discussed. \nWednesday\, May 13th\, 2026\n6:30-8:00pm (doors open at 6:15pm)\nOttawa location to be shared with registered participants \nNumber of participants: 35 (max) \nRegistration \nTo register\, please fill out this form. Because this event has limited attendance\, we would like people to register by Friday\, May 8. DESCRIPTION:Queer Death Salon is a community space for all 2SLGBTQIA+ people to come together to discuss death\, dying and grief. It is a facilitated drop-in discussion space\, with the purpose of building connection\, skill\, and resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ people navigating end of life in our personal lives and in our communities. \nIn this interactive workshop\, participants will explore and practice the concept of “Bid for Care” as a foundational element for building responsive and supportive communities. Drawing on principles of radical mental health and community care\, participants will learn practical strategies for recognizing bids for care\, assessing personal capacity to respond\, and cultivating a culture of mutual support. \noumou is a Senegalese-Guinean\, multi-hyphenate polycreative – therapist(ish)\, coach\, disruptor\, zinester\, writer\, speaker\, consultant and facilitator of spaces for radical learning. oumou is a two-time graduate of Syracuse University and a former adjunct professor at the same school. she is the creator of RMHFA\, a workshop that is slowly but surely changing the care and mental health landscape.
