SUMMARY:Learn about Ottawa’s radical history on a walking tour
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Ottawa’s radical history on a walking tour \nTake your radicalism outdoors this summer so you and your friends can learn from previous generations of troublemakers on a radical historical walking tour. \nMy name is Brian McDougall. Since 2014\, I’ve given hundreds of radical tours to visitors\, residents\, and local activists. \nWhy do we need to know our history? It’s true that history doesn’t repeat itself\, and it can’t provide us with ready-made formulae to guide us today. But\, knowing the inspiring stories about how others fought for social justice – whether they won or lost – helps to sharpen our ability to think through the strategic and tactical issues we face today. \nPeoples’ History Walking Tours: \n\nBuilding the Rideau Canal and the making of the Ottawa working class\nProtest\, strike\, and rebellion in the history of Canada’s capital\nAn unauthorized history of Parliament Hill: From Indigenous land to headquarters of Canada’s elite\nIndigenous peoples and colonialism in the history of Canada’s capital\nFrom sacred site to industrial wasteland: colonialism and class struggle in the Chaudière District\nMore than taverns and brothels: French Canadian\, Irish\, and Jewish struggles against oppression in Lowertown\nThe rise and fall of federal public service militancy in Ottawa-Gatineau\, 1965-2023\nColonialism and resistance in Canada’s capital: lessons from Indigenous\, Irish\, Black South African\, and Palestinian struggles\nFailure to revolt? Why Winnipeg had a general strike in 1919 while Ottawa’s was aborted\n\nHow good are the tours? In 85 reviews on Trip Advisor\, 79 tour participants rated their experience 5 stars out of 5. You can read their comments here: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g155004-d7035441-Reviews-Peoples_History_Walking_Tours-Ottawa_Ontario.html \nWhat does a tour involve? Tours are given in English\, last from 3 to 3.5 hours\, and mainly take place in the center of Ottawa\, May to October. \nWho leads the tours? I do. I’m a former university teacher and federal public servant\, land long-time socialist\, trade unionist and social justice activist in Ottawa-Gatineau. I’m currently active with the Palestinian solidarity caucus and the national education committee of my public service union: the Canadian Association of Professional Employees. \nHow much does a tour cost? Tours cost $35 per person and require a minimum of four participants. Groups can be as large as 20\, with those of 10 or more eligible for a discount. \nHow do you book a tour? Organize a group and select a preferred day and time. (Tours are organized on demand.) Then send me an email brian.phwt@gmail.com or book through my website https://ottawahistorytours.com Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

SUMMARY:October Chain Fast for Palestinian Family Reunification: Issue Visas and Arrange Evacuations NOW
DESCRIPTION:From October 1 to October 21\, please pick a day to fast (according to your own tradition of fasting) to demand the immediate evacuation from Gaza of all remaining 3\,700 Palestinian applicants for Canadian visas and the finalization of all 2\,500+ applications for Palestinian genocide survivors still stranded in Egypt. During your fast day\, we ask you to: \n• Make a selfie with a message (such as Fasting for Palestinian Family Reunification or “Fasting for Urgent Gaza Evacuation”) that you can share with us and on your social media; \n• Write a letter and make a call to your MP and the appropriate government officials (samples below) demanding immediate evacuation of all remaining visa applicants from Gaza; \n• Share on social media the story of one of the families hugely impacted by the negative impacts of this program (we will pair you with a family and provide pictures and text to share). We can also directly connect you with that particular family to stay in touch with them afterwards and continue advocating for their right to be free of the genocide and joined with their loved ones in Canada. \nTo pick a date to fast\, please email a preferred date\, your name and town/city to be shared on our website\, to the Canadian Palestinian Family Reunification Project of the Rural Refugee Rights Network at tasc@web.ca \nEach day of the chain fast will represent one of the 21 months that Canada’s None is Too Many Gaza temporary residence visa (TRV) program has been in effect\, 20 months of deliberate institutional inaction and lethal obstacle creation\, with hundreds of lives lost waiting on Canadian visas. The final week of the chain fast coincides with the return of MPs to Parliament. \nCanada does have the capacity to evacuate visa applicants from Gaza. But it has only directly assisted in the evacuation of fewer than 2% of the 5\,000 applicants\, and in late July evacuated 11 Canadian citizens through the Karem Abu Salem crossing. We engage in this fast to highlight the urgent need to evacuate the remaining 98% of applicants. \nThe punishingly slow pace of visa processing for Gazans – a paltry average of 2 applications completed per day\, with a lethal waiting time for some of over a year – stands in stark contrast to the Canada–Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program. During CUAET’s first year\, Canada welcomed 129\,000 Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion and approved over half a million visas (an average of 1\,400 applications per day)\, usually within a two-week turnaround. Canada waived security screening for those aged up to 17 and over 61\, and dropped a required medical exam despite the Ukrainian population’s much higher risk of carrying tuberculosis\, which Ottawa conceded “posed potential health risks to Canada.” \nSimilarly\, Canada welcomed over 8\,000 Israeli visa holders during 2024. Palestinian Canadians and refugee advocates point to such figures as clear proof of a painful\, discriminatory double standard that fails to adequately respond to what Canadian officials acknowledge are “catastrophic conditions” in Gaza. \nThe Gaza TRV program eerily echoes one of the most shameful periods of Canadian history\, the None is Too Many policies designed to keep Jews fleeing genocide out of Canada during the 1930s and 1940s. Almost 79 years after Canada turned away a boat packed with Jewish refugees (the St. Louis)\, then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued an apology\, noting 254 St. Louis passengers were murdered upon their forced return to Europe\, and declaring: “By issuing this apology\, it is my sincere hope that we can shine a light on this painful chapter of our history and ensure that its lessons are never forgotten.” \nSadly\, different lessons were learned by different people. For those in the government who historically and to this day wrongfully treat certain groups of people with suspicion\, the lesson is that they can get away with racist exclusion as long as there is no public outrage. Hence\, we have seen Public Safety Canada agencies like CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) and CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) treat every last Palestinian from Gaza as a potential risk instead of viewing them through the humanitarian lens of families escaping the worst horrors imaginable. That is why actions like the Chain Fast are so important: another reminder of the many people across this land who stand in solidarity with and recognize the humanity of these Palestinian families. \nOrganized by the Rural Refugee Rights Network’s Canadian Palestinian Family Reunification Project\nMore info at tasc@web.ca

SUMMARY:NO TYRANTS - Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:NO TYRANTS/NO KINGS is an international day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies. We’ve watched as they’ve threatened Canada’s sovereignty\, disrupted international trade\, detained tens of thousands of people (including Canadians) in ICE concentration camps\, cracked down on free speech\, detained people for their political views\, and defied the courts. They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies. \nOn October 18\, Indivisible Ottawa is STANDING UP and saying NO TYRANTS in solidarity with Indivisible Abroad\, concerned Canadians and allies around the world. Say NO to Donald Trump and authoritarianism. Fascism is a serious threat not just in the US\, but worldwide. It is imperative that we make a stand against fascism in our nation’s capital. Meet at the York St Steps next to the US Embassy. \nA core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind\, including those legally permitted\, should not be brought to events.

SUMMARY:Sexual Bereavement - Queer Death Salon
DESCRIPTION:Let’s gather and engage with our questions and feelings about: \n-sex after the death of a loved one.\n-the disenfranchised grief of polyamorous and kinky relational loss.\n-how pleasure and erotic energy can support our mourning.\n-changes in desire as death approaches for ourselves or a loved one.\n-cultural expectations of how a widow should act and our internalized stories about that.\n-anything sex/pleasure and bereavement related. \nNo question is too taboo. \nJess will invite folks to participate in embodiment exercises\, freewrite and consider the ways they want to be in relationship to their sexual expression within their (anticipatory) grief. \nJess DeVries is a queer somatic sex coach and grief worker. She primarily serves the queer/trans community supporting folks in reclaiming body autonomy and to inspire curiosity about pleasure and sexual expression\, guiding folks to define and pursue pleasure on their own terms. She is a grief advocate who regularly facilitates spaces for people to grieve\, inviting the wisdom of the body to guide the grief process. \nWithin the realms of grief\, she has trained with Being Here\, Human – as well as – Shauna Janz of Sacred Grief. Her grief work is held by connections to her ancestors\, mugwort\, hawthorne\, rose\, connection to her pussy\, and many many tears. Within the realms of pleasure and embodiment\, she has trained in Somatic Sex Education and Sexological Bodywork at the ISSSE – as well as – the Somatica Method with the Somatica Institute. Her pleasure work is held by delighting in sights\, smells\, and tastes\, a dirty imagination\, and sharing touch with human and non-human kin. \nJess provides 1:1 sessions online or by phone. She also facilitates workshops\, grief circles\, and rituals online for queer folks\, ex-Christians\, and Covid realist communities.

SUMMARY:Science for the People 'Canada' The Social Production of Science online reading group
DESCRIPTION:This reading group continues SftP’s tradition of running a reading group alongside our local organising\, and the goal of this series is to better link our collective education with collective action\, bringing together members to deepen our shared understanding of science\, power\, and liberation.\nDeveloped and maintained by the Science for the People – New Haven Chapter\, this curriculum investigates how Marxism\, science\, and capitalism intersect — and how these forces shape both knowledge and the material conditions of our world. Through discussion and reflection\, we’ll consider what it means to reclaim science as a tool for social transformation.\nScience for the People ‘Canada’ has grown\, both in number of chapters and membership\, and now is a crucial moment to clarify our strategic goals and direction. This series is one way we can do that together.\nAll members\, new and old\, are warmly invited. Each module will include two readings; participants are encouraged to complete both\, and facilitators will provide summaries to guide discussion. Note:\nTo help foster an atmosphere of comradely curiosity:\nPlease come prepared with:\n– One open-ended question about the readings to share with the group\n– One response or connection to organizing you have done or would like to do locally\nModule meetings will occur monthly on Monday evenings at 8pm EST. \nFollow Register link for more details!

SUMMARY:Policing Black Lives (2nd ed) - Book launch with Robyn Maynard
DESCRIPTION:WHO AND WHAT?\nJoin us for an evening with award-winning and best-selling author and scholar Robyn Maynard (@policingblack) as she launches the revised and expanded edition of her book “Policing Black Lives: State Violence in Canada from Slavery to the Present” (published @fernpub) on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory | in Ottawa. \nFollowing her talk\, she will be joined by local anti-Black racism and police defunding organizers Nhora Aust (@justiceforanthonyaust)\, Robin Browne (@black_hubnoir)\, and police violence survivor Anthony Marriott for a roundtable discussion moderated by Sheryl-Ann Simpson (Planning for Abolition) on the state of Black freedom struggles and their visions for futures beyond surveillance\, policing\, and imprisonment. \nWHY?\nWhile all levels of government across the country have committed to ending anti-Black racism\, it persists\, including through increased investments in institutions and practices such as policing and imprisonment. In a local context where the Ottawa Police Service is proposing a massive 6.5% / $25 million increase to their operating budget for 2026 and is trying to get their cops back in schools\, and at a time when children warehoused at the William E. Hay youth detention centre routinely face harm and the Government of Ontario has announced a series of jail infrastructure projects that\, if all built\, will increase our province’s human caging capacity by 1\,601 beds to the tune of nearly $3 billion for construction alone\, there is a need to collectively reimagine what is possible and organize towards achieving real safety and liberation for all. \nEVENT ORGANIZERS:\n@cpepgroup\, @cappontario & the #NOPE | No Ontario Prison Expansion campaign \nEVENT CONTACT:\njustin.piche@uottawa.ca

SUMMARY:Book launch: Man Up: The New Misogyny and the Rise of Violent Extremism
DESCRIPTION:Join Carleton University’s Department of History for a talk by Cynthia Miller-Idriss as she discusses her latest book\, Man Up: The New Misogyny and the Rise of Violent Extremism. \nWhat two things do most violent extremists have in common? Most of us know the first: they are almost always men or boys. But the second? They are almost always virulent misogynists\, homophobes\, or transphobes. Yet\, despite all evidence\, misogyny is barely acknowledged by the media. Miller-Idriss\, a leading expert on extremism\, addresses this crucial oversight head-on. \nThursday Oct 30th\, 6:00pm – 8:00pm\nDominion-Chalmers Centre\, 355 Cooper St.\nRead more & RSVP

SUMMARY:A Sonic Bridge: Florence-Delphine Roux (live) / Paul Jasen (talk)
DESCRIPTION:Access your electromagnetic imagination through an evening of radio art \nJoin us to explore the Art of Transmission with an evening of groundbreaking radio art and performance presented in partnership with CUAG. Explore the radical potentialities of analog radio through the work of artist and author Paul Jasen and media and sound artist Florence-Delphine Roux. \nArtist and author Paul Jasen (A People of Oscillators) will discuss his project The ether is free\, a “fictive radioscape” released as an audio recording\, radio transmitter kit and text. Discover the electromagnetic wilderness of natural radio\, the interventions of pirates and shortwave spies\, and consider how accessible DIY media might help new collectivities take root beyond the reach of The Platform. \nFlorence-Delphine Roux will present her performance Chronique d’Ether where she captures\, perturbs and reveals radiophonic and electromagnetic frequencies in an interactive dialogue between space\, antennas and her body. Through electronic craft and electromagnetically responsive sculpture\, Roux cultivates an environment of attentive listening\, unsettled by the noise of the world. \nThis event is part of CUAG’s Stonecroft Semester series themes “The Art of Transmission”. The event is free and open to everyone. No registration is required. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

This program foregrounds queer and trans sex workers’ own voices\, speaking candidly to one another about their experiences\, or engaging with straight media to explode myths and bust stigma faced by sex workers. This program is presented by the “Sex Worker Self-Authoring in the Canadian Women’s Movement Archive” project at Carleton University in collaboration with Ottawa Independent Companions\, C.O.R.A.S.\, and Maggie’s Toronto Sex Worker Action Project. SUMMARY:Stand Up for Wildlife- Stop Nuclear Waste!
DESCRIPTION:We’re back in court on November 12 to defend the Kichi Sibi and our watershed from a nuclear waste megadump! Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area\, Kebaowek First Nation\, Sierra Club Canada and the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility took Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to court and WON . . . but CNL has appealed.\nJOIN US as CNL’s appeal is heard\, and citizen groups and First Nations again argue before a judge why the law must be respected.\nA judge said that Environment Canada should not have issued a “Species at Risk Permit” for the radioactive waste dump to be built on CNL’s chosen site near the Ottawa River\, where it will destroy habitat for protected and endangered species. CNL is a creation of and funded by the federal government – so it’s the feds fighting citizens in Federal Court.\nJoin us from Noon to 2 PM in front of 90 Sparks St. Do it for the endangered bats\, songbirds\, turtles\, Eastern wolves and bears living on the site of the future radioactive megadump!\nMany of these animals are sacred to Indigenous peoples\, as is the Kichi Sibi. Read more about the unique biodiversity and threatened species at the Chalk River site:\nhttps://concernedcitizens.net/…/ottawa-river…/\nhttps://raventrust.com/…/radioactive-waste-away-from…/\nBACKGROUND:\nThe Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved construction of a seven-storey radioactive mound beside the Ottawa River at Chalk River Laboratories\, a federal nuclear research facility 180 km north-west of Ottawa.\nThe waste facility construction will remove 10\,000 mature trees and destroy vital habitat for endangered bats\, the Canadian Warbler\, the rare Golden-Winged Warbler\, Blanding’s Turtles\, endangered Eastern Wolves and active Black Bear dens.\nThe megadump will hold one million tonnes of radioactive and other hazardous waste\, threatening the drinking water of millions of Canadians. Ten of the 11 Algonquin First Nations are opposed to the project\, and a Federal Court judge agreed that free\, prior and informed consent was not respected.\nMore than 140 municipalities are also opposed. Canadian taxpayers are footing the multi-billion-dollar bill\, but a corporate consortium is calling the shots. The waste needs to be cleaned up\, but there are better ways to do so. \nTen things Canadians need to know about the giant radioactive waste mound coming to the Ottawa River
