DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome\, especially people who care about children\, and child care. This webinar will fill you in on the context right now\, as we begin to build a new public service. We will also talk about what organizing and advocacy can look like\, here on the local level.\nOur guest speaker is Liz Adamson\, Research & Policy Coordinator at Child Care Now (the national organization). Canadian-born and raised\, Liz moved to Australia in 2009 for a three-month internship looking at Australian ECEC policy – and ended up staying for 14 years. She completed her PhD on comparative approaches to funding and regulation of in-home child care in Australia\, Canada and the United Kingdom. As a social policy researcher and mother to three young children\, she is passionate and committed to building policy evidence that can inform the expansion of affordable\, accessible and high quality ELCC for all children and families in Canada.

It’s a chance for us to remember and lift up all those in the past and present working to make this world a more just\, livable\, and delightful place for everyone. We hope the May Day Picnic will be a chance for us to come together and share stories about all the wonderful\, inspiring\, and powerful organizing taking place in Ottawa and beyond. Plus\, who doesn’t just love a picnic with pals! \nLet’s get together to share stories\, make new friends\, and collectively imagine possibilities for worlds beyond capitalism\, colonialism\, and extractivism. \nThe picnic will feature collaborative banners to color and draw on\, face-painting\, and other activities. Plus\, it’s a park\, with playground equipment and plenty of space to run around. Feel free to bring your outdoor activity of choice! \nFood and Drink \nPunch Up plans to provide some fruit\, snacks\, and drinks to share with everyone. But feel free to go all in on the picnic theme and bring snacks for yourself\, or to share. \nIF you do plan to bring a food to share\, we will have materials on hand so you can label your shareable goodies (i.e. vegan\, contains nuts\, gluten-free\, etc). If a kid at the potluck isn’t under your care\, please check with their adult(s) before you feed them any food! \nPunch Up will bring a few spare plates and cutlery\, but please bring your own dishes and utensils to use for eating if at all possible. \nAnd of course\, there’s no need to bring any food! You’re more than welcome to just come and eat. There’s almost always more than enough food to go around. \nKids\, friends\, lovers\, and others all welcome. \nAccessibility \nIf the weather is good\, the event will take place in the outdoor park space behind Jack Purcell Community Centre. If the weather is dicey\, we will be using a room inside the Centre. This room is on the first floor and is wheelchair accessible. \nThe first floor has gender-segregated wheelchair accessible washrooms. On the 2nd floor\, there is a washroom that is wheelchair accessible and gender neutral. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fundraiser event\, “Stories of Resilience” in solidarity with Sudan\, Congo and Palestine on April 28\, 2024 at 2:00 PM at 2391 Pepin Court. Open to anyone who wants to come together in community\, to honour the resilience that the Sudanese\, Congolese\, and Palestinian people have had to find to survive\, and do what we can to support them from where we are.\n\nThis event will include a silent auction\, raffle\, light refreshments\, and performances (poetry\, music\, storytelling) on the theme of resilience.\n\nWe will be collecting donations\, which will be split equally between the three groups via legitimate and verified organizations. DESCRIPTION:The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) happening in Ottawa from 23 to 29 April 2024 is a pivotal moment where we can make or break the Global Plastics Treaty. Pressure on the negotiation process is high as we move into the last year of the process and are still far from a Treaty that would truly address the plastics crisis\, including the harms that plastic causes to communities across its entire life cycle. \nThis is why civil society groups from around the world are coming together in a mass mobilization at INC-4 in Ottawa and in different satellite actions in multiple locations globally to center the goals and values of communities most impacted by the plastic lifecycle. \nJoin us in Ottawa on 21 April 2024 (Sunday) as we march from Parliament Hill to Shaw Center to remind governments who exactly they are negotiating for at the INC.

With minimal clues\, Ivy and her mother Susan embark on an unwelcome journey to find Heather which ultimately brings the pair closer together despite challenging circumstances. DESCRIPTION:Three months into the failed Gaza “None is Too Many” program\, not a single person has been saved.\nPlease join us for a peaceful statement to call urgent changes tpo ensure immediate family reunification with loved ones in Gaza.\n\nPlease join us anytime between 12 noon and 2 pm on Tuesday\, April 16 (marking 99 days of this failed program) for a peaceful vigil at the House of Commons entrance at O’Connor and Wellington in Ottawa (where we have held three\nprevious vigils).\n\nPlease let us know if you can attend so we can plan how many signs and banners to bring.\n\nOrganized by Rural Refugee Rights Network and Gazan Canadians League\n\nImmigration Minister Marc Miller has failed\, despite months of lobbying and public education\, to make critical changes to his failed program. He must immediately:\n1. Release all codes so everyone can apply immediately\n2. Lift the 1\,000-person cap\n3. Expand eligibility for anchor relatives to include refugees and refugee claimants and student and work permit holders\n4. Implement a 14-day processing period for TRVs as was the standard with the Ukraine program and assign extra staff as needed to ensure compliance with this timeline.\n5. Allow those who were temporarily outside of and had planned to return to Gaza as of October 7 to apply\n6. Remove the requirement that applicants remain under bombardment and starvation in Gaza\, especially those who have escaped to Egypt and are currently rendered ineligible\n7. Waive application and biometrics fees.\n8. Rectify systemic errors which continue to produce false reports of incomplete applications or which send application news to the wrong person.\n9. Remove intrusive and invasive questions from the TRV application (social media accounts\, scars\, employment back to the age of 16) and instruct IRCC officers on the nature of how the social service sector worked in Gaza\, such that procedural fairness letters are not asking ethically questionable things like whether a nurse or doctor ever provided medical services to someone from Hamas.\n10. Engage with Global Affairs Canada staff and DND staff to ensure swift and safe passage across the Rafah border.

DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome to attend our jewelry-making festival supporting Justice for Indigenous Women (J4IW) and 2Spirit Manitoba. This is an opportunity to participate in meaningful reconciliation! \nRegistration Required: Please complete this short google form to register. \nCost: Suggested donation $25 (link to donate on above order form). This includes all materials needed to create your own jewelry and refreshments. Additional kits are available to purchase for $10 to take home. \nOther details: \nNo experience needed!  All materials will be provided (but if you have a needle-nose pliers\, please bring them along) and we will teach you how to make this jewelry that is not only beautiful but also educational. Our Governor General\, Mary Simon\, has proudly worn J4IW jewelry! \nElder Barbara Dumont Hill and others will provide education and story-telling about Indigenous issues including Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman\, Girls\, and Two-Spirit Peoples (MMIWG2S). \nBeverages and snacks will be generously provided by the Ojigkwanong Indigenous Student Centre at Carleton University\, who is also providing their special space for us to use and enjoy.

In a world that dehumanizes Palestinians\, we mirror Palestinian transgressive joy as an expression of resistance\, hope\, and dignity in the face of erasure\, apartheid\, and fear. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Ottawa launch of Suing for Silence: Sexual Violence and Defamation Law with author Mandi Gray. \nThursday\, April 11\, 7pm – 8pm\nOctopus Books\, 116 Third Ave.\, Ottawa \nSuing for Silence is a groundbreaking examination of how men accused of sexual violence use defamation lawsuits as a weapon to silence those who attempt to hold them accountable. \nAs Mandi Gray demonstrates\, Canadian defamation law helps perpetuate the myth that false allegations of sexual violence are common. Gray draws on media reports\, courtroom observations\, and interviews with silence breakers\, activists\, and lawyers to examine the societal and individual implications of so-called liar lawsuits. She argues that their purpose is not to achieve justice but to intimidate\, silence\, and drain the resources of those who speak out against sexual violence and even report their own assaults – and to discourage others from doing the same. \nThis meticulous work reveals the gendered underpinnings of Canadian defamation law\, which has long protected men’s reputations at the expense of women’s sexual autonomy. Sexual violence discourse must have adequate protection if it is to be heard. \nMandi Gray is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Trent University and an anti-violence activist. She is regularly featured in Canadian media on issues pertaining to sexual violence\, including in the Toronto Star\, Globe and Mail\, Toronto Life\, and on the CBC.

Together\, we can make a difference! \nOrganized by Carleton Climate Commons\, Climate PUBlics brings people together in some of Ottawa’s liveliest pubs to discuss climate catastrophe\, environmental justice\, and our shared future. \nSpecial Guests:  \nSarah Rotz is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. Her academic and organizing work is grounded in environmentmental justice and focused on land and food systems.  Sarah’s community-based work with various organizations and campaigns includes food and farmer’s associations\, fossil fuels divestment\, climate justice\, and food sovereignty movements. She is a member of the RAIR collective\, a settler and Indigenous collective committed to dialogue and action in support of Indigenous land rematriation grounded in principles of food justice and Indigenous sovereignty. \nAndrew Fitzel is majoring in cognitive science and  minoring in the environmental and climate humanities (EACH) at Carleton. He is co-president of Animal Rights Carleton (ARC) which is a student-run social group that advocates for a plant-based lifestyle. It also aims to educate about issues pertaining to animal rights and animal agriculture\, as well as investigating their implications in terms of ethics\, the climate crisis\, and human health. \nHeart City Farm\, Matthew Mason-Phillips is one half of Heart City Farm along with co-founder Madeleine Maltby. They have been growing food in and around the city of Ottawa for the last decade and remain committed to sustainable agriculture\, food security and local food culture. \nAmanda Wilson is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Innovation at Saint Paul University. Her areas of research include food movements and carceral food systems\, collective organizing\, and enacting a politics of possibility.  She is a long-time community organizer in Ottawa\, member of the Punch Up Collective\, and President of the Board of the Social Innovation Atelier.

DESCRIPTION:Three international experts will be in town very briefly\, and we have the chance to chat with them about how to build a system of early learning and child care here in Ottawa. \nAisling Gallagher (New Zealand / Aotearoa) is Senior Lecturer in Social Geography at Massey University. Her research looks into the politics of childcare and ECEC provisioning in the Anglophone contexts of New Zealand\, Australia\, Ireland and the UK. \nEva Lloyd (United Kingdom) is Professor Emerita of Early Childhood in the School of Education and Communities at the University of East London. For over three decades Professor Lloyd has specialised in the study of national and international early childhood education and care policies and systems\, particularly marketised systems\, and their impact on children growing up with disadvantage. \nMerete Villsen (Denmark) is the head manager of early childcare in Aalborg Municipality\, and intimately understands the approach taken in Denmark towards developing excellent childcare facilities and strategic childcare management. \nLooking forward to your company\, questions\, and ideas!
