DESCRIPTION:Join author Ryan Conrad and HIV/AIDS activist Darien Taylor for the launch of Conrad’s new anthology titled Toronto Living With AIDS. This publication investigates an extraordinary moment in the histories of both activist media and AIDS activism: the creation of a community-driven video series about HIV/AIDS for public-access cable television in Toronto at the beginning of the 1990s. The event will feature a short screening of early Canadian HIV/AIDS activist video\, a short presentation\, and a dialogue between Conrad and Taylor who is interviewed in the book and who also contributed a video to the the TLWA series on women and HIV/AIDS. \nThis event is sponsored by DARC\, Qu’ART\, PUBLIC Books\, Archive/Counter-Archive and the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation @ Carleton University.

We have a solid advocacy record\, scoring ‘wins’ such as strengthening the City’s Tree Protection Bylaw and getting the City to report annually on our greenhouse gas emissions. \nElectrify613 – an online community for neighbours and experts to connect with each other in making our homes more efficient and emissions-free. We’re on a mission to help fully electrify every neighbourhood in Ottawa. \nEnviroCentre – an environmental not-for-profit organization located in Ottawa. For more than 20 years\, we have been delivering programs and services designed to help individuals\, businesses\, and communities reduce their carbon emissions and lighten their impacts on the environment. EnviroCentre’s mission is to scope\, design\, deliver and scale practical solutions to dramatically reduce climate emissions in our communities. Our vision is that a sustainable\, net-zero future is achieved in Ottawa\, and we are taking action every day to support that goal. \nWe work in collaboration with partners and clients to implement meaningful projects and programs across Eastern Ontario. Mainly focused on light-duty vehicles\, EVCO also works on the electrification of medium and heavy-duty vehicles such as OC Transpo’s bus fleet. \nOttawa Renewable Energy Co-operative (OREC) – Energy generation has long been centralized\, but the landscape is changing. Meet the Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative (OREC) and find out how community funded renewable energy allows individuals to benefit directly from the energy transition and brings more democracy and transparency to electricity generation. With a 14 year track record and a portfolio of 24 renewable energy and 3 energy efficiency projects (and growing)\, OREC strives to ensure locally funded renewable energy assets are an important piece of our journey away from fossil fuels. OREC raises capital through the sale of preference shares. This capital is pooled by the Co-operative to build new or acquire existing projects\, bringing them under community ownership. We will also talk about what organizing and advocacy can look like\, here on the local level.\nOur guest speaker is Liz Adamson\, Research & Policy Coordinator at Child Care Now (the national organization). Canadian-born and raised\, Liz moved to Australia in 2009 for a three-month internship looking at Australian ECEC policy – and ended up staying for 14 years. She completed her PhD on comparative approaches to funding and regulation of in-home child care in Australia\, Canada and the United Kingdom. As a social policy researcher and mother to three young children\, she is passionate and committed to building policy evidence that can inform the expansion of affordable\, accessible and high quality ELCC for all children and families in Canada.

Attendees are welcome to come with questions\, stories\, or special objects to share with the group. Some months\, we may have a guest speaker or a community researcher for all or a portion of a session. Other months\, there may be a predetermined topic of conversation for a deep-dive. These will be announced as they are scheduled. \n*** \nApril’s Queer Death Salon is for those impacted by the death of someone they’ve had a bad\, difficult\, or abusive relationship with. \nSome questions to consider: \nHow has the death of this person/these people\, impacted me?\nHow have I been expected to relate to this death?\nHow can I make sense of the relationship(s) we had when I’m the only one left?\nParticipants will have the opportunity to introduce topics and ask questions of the group.

DESCRIPTION:The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) happening in Ottawa from 23 to 29 April 2024 is a pivotal moment where we can make or break the Global Plastics Treaty. Pressure on the negotiation process is high as we move into the last year of the process and are still far from a Treaty that would truly address the plastics crisis\, including the harms that plastic causes to communities across its entire life cycle. \nThis is why civil society groups from around the world are coming together in a mass mobilization at INC-4 in Ottawa and in different satellite actions in multiple locations globally to center the goals and values of communities most impacted by the plastic lifecycle. \nJoin us in Ottawa on 21 April 2024 (Sunday) as we march from Parliament Hill to Shaw Center to remind governments who exactly they are negotiating for at the INC.
