Screenings will be at 11am\, 1pm\, and 3pm in the DARC Microcinema. \nSet in the late 90s\, Rustic Oracle is a dramatic feature about Ivy\, an 8-year-old girl trying to understand what happened to her big sister who has vanished from their small Mohawk community. With minimal clues\, Ivy and her mother Susan embark on an unwelcome journey to find Heather which ultimately brings the pair closer together despite challenging circumstances. Behind the story of desperation\, told through the eyes of a child\, lies one of hope\, growth\, awakening and love. \nCome watch the film\, and then join us the following day for an informative conversation about the importance of Indigenous representation in the arts and media\, narrative sovereignty and the power of storytelling to educate\, share and heal with the filmmaker herself.

DESCRIPTION:Three months into the failed Gaza “None is Too Many” program\, not a single person has been saved.\nPlease join us for a peaceful statement to call urgent changes tpo ensure immediate family reunification with loved ones in Gaza.\n\nPlease join us anytime between 12 noon and 2 pm on Tuesday\, April 16 (marking 99 days of this failed program) for a peaceful vigil at the House of Commons entrance at O’Connor and Wellington in Ottawa (where we have held three\nprevious vigils).\n\nPlease let us know if you can attend so we can plan how many signs and banners to bring.\n\nOrganized by Rural Refugee Rights Network and Gazan Canadians League\n\nImmigration Minister Marc Miller has failed\, despite months of lobbying and public education\, to make critical changes to his failed program. He must immediately:\n1. Release all codes so everyone can apply immediately\n2. Lift the 1\,000-person cap\n3. Expand eligibility for anchor relatives to include refugees and refugee claimants and student and work permit holders\n4. Implement a 14-day processing period for TRVs as was the standard with the Ukraine program and assign extra staff as needed to ensure compliance with this timeline.\n5. Allow those who were temporarily outside of and had planned to return to Gaza as of October 7 to apply\n6. Remove the requirement that applicants remain under bombardment and starvation in Gaza\, especially those who have escaped to Egypt and are currently rendered ineligible\n7. Waive application and biometrics fees.\n8. Rectify systemic errors which continue to produce false reports of incomplete applications or which send application news to the wrong person.\n9. Remove intrusive and invasive questions from the TRV application (social media accounts\, scars\, employment back to the age of 16) and instruct IRCC officers on the nature of how the social service sector worked in Gaza\, such that procedural fairness letters are not asking ethically questionable things like whether a nurse or doctor ever provided medical services to someone from Hamas.\n10. Engage with Global Affairs Canada staff and DND staff to ensure swift and safe passage across the Rafah border.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Ottawa launch of Suing for Silence: Sexual Violence and Defamation Law with author Mandi Gray. \nThursday\, April 11\, 7pm – 8pm\nOctopus Books\, 116 Third Ave.\, Ottawa \nSuing for Silence is a groundbreaking examination of how men accused of sexual violence use defamation lawsuits as a weapon to silence those who attempt to hold them accountable. \nAs Mandi Gray demonstrates\, Canadian defamation law helps perpetuate the myth that false allegations of sexual violence are common. Gray draws on media reports\, courtroom observations\, and interviews with silence breakers\, activists\, and lawyers to examine the societal and individual implications of so-called liar lawsuits. She argues that their purpose is not to achieve justice but to intimidate\, silence\, and drain the resources of those who speak out against sexual violence and even report their own assaults – and to discourage others from doing the same. \nThis meticulous work reveals the gendered underpinnings of Canadian defamation law\, which has long protected men’s reputations at the expense of women’s sexual autonomy. Sexual violence discourse must have adequate protection if it is to be heard. \nMandi Gray is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Trent University and an anti-violence activist. She is regularly featured in Canadian media on issues pertaining to sexual violence\, including in the Toronto Star\, Globe and Mail\, Toronto Life\, and on the CBC.

She is a member of the RAIR collective\, a settler and Indigenous collective committed to dialogue and action in support of Indigenous land rematriation grounded in principles of food justice and Indigenous sovereignty. \nAndrew Fitzel is majoring in cognitive science and  minoring in the environmental and climate humanities (EACH) at Carleton. He is co-president of Animal Rights Carleton (ARC) which is a student-run social group that advocates for a plant-based lifestyle. It also aims to educate about issues pertaining to animal rights and animal agriculture\, as well as investigating their implications in terms of ethics\, the climate crisis\, and human health. \nHeart City Farm\, Matthew Mason-Phillips is one half of Heart City Farm along with co-founder Madeleine Maltby. They have been growing food in and around the city of Ottawa for the last decade and remain committed to sustainable agriculture\, food security and local food culture. \nAmanda Wilson is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Innovation at Saint Paul University. Her areas of research include food movements and carceral food systems\, collective organizing\, and enacting a politics of possibility.  She is a long-time community organizer in Ottawa\, member of the Punch Up Collective\, and President of the Board of the Social Innovation Atelier.

Her research looks into the politics of childcare and ECEC provisioning in the Anglophone contexts of New Zealand\, Australia\, Ireland and the UK. \nEva Lloyd (United Kingdom) is Professor Emerita of Early Childhood in the School of Education and Communities at the University of East London. DESCRIPTION:Gord Hill is famously known to be the creator of the master piece of grassroots history and art called 500 Years of Indigenous Resistance Comic Book. The new version was published in french recently by Prise de parole. They are also presenting an exhibit of his work translated to french. He is a long time anarchist\, indigenous resister\, social organizer\, researcher\, writer and multidisciplinary artist. Gord will talk about how he has been for most of his life both a grassroots researcher\, writer\, artist and militant working on his major publication called Warrior Publications. Gord had a major influence on many peoples and movements over the last decades. DESCRIPTION:For 3 days in February\, Palestinian Canadians with loved ones in Gaza held vigil for 8 hours daily at the entrance to the House of Commons. The message was clear: issue the permits needed to help their families escape the genocide. Immigration Minister Marc Miller drove by\, saw the families\, but refused to meet with them. \nIt is over two full months since the program that was supposed to help them opened\, yet it has saved no one\, and scores have been killed waiting for Canada to end its “None is Too Many” policy for Palestinians\, a shameful repeat of its failure to rescue Jews from genocide in the 1930s and 1940s. \nMarc Miller must take immediate action to change direction\, fix the huge problems with the system\, and end the built-in\, discriminatory obstacles that are placing these families’ loved ones at lethal risk. \nToward that end\, we will gather once more on March 19 and 20\, to meet with MPs\, members of the public\, and one another to continue pressing to open the doors to safety. The biggest obstacle to family reunification is not the Rafah border. DESCRIPTION:Funded by Reconstructing Judaism’s Auerbach Launch Grant\, Rabbinic Student Léah Miller Returns! \nDrawing partially from the artistic pedagogy of the Jewish Studio Process\, Léah will lead folx to think about and play with the concept of Jewish creativity. In all three sessions\, there will be time for text study\, self-reflection\, and creative process\, and the sessions will not be dependent on each other. There are no requirements for artistic skills or materials\, but registrants will receive a suggested list of how to prepare. SUMMARY:Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:This pilgrimage walk is a response to a global invitation by an autonomous network of Christian organizations and churches engaging in a prayerful show of solidarity around the world. During Lent (Feb. 14-March 28)\, people will walk the ‘length of the Gaza strip’\, and with our bodies\, we will prayerfully map Gaza onto our own cities; in this case\, Ottawa\, on the traditional unceded lands of the Anishinaabe Algonquin people. Our route will be 22km\, which is about half the length of the Gaza Strip. We will start and end at Ottawa City Hall\, with several stops along the way for rest and prayer. We expect the walk to take about 8 hours\, and welcome participants who want to join for shorter sections. Enduring and Sustained Ceasefire.\nB. Immediate flow of life saving food\, water\, aid\, fuel and humanitarian assistance.\nC. Release of all hostages – both the Israeli hostages held by Hamas – and the Palestinian hostages held in the Israeli prison system.\nD. End of occupation so a just peace can begin. \nWe know there are many more “asks” that could have been made\, but these walks have been created to lift up the voices of Palestinians who have been suffering for decades. \nWe extend a warm welcome to people who are not connected to any spiritual or religious tradition.
