SUMMARY:Moving from Despair to Community: Early Childhood Educators and Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 18th\n7:30pm – 8:30pm EST\nRegister on Zoom \nWe\, the Early Years Liberation Collective\, are offering a safe space for the early years\ncommunity to be in solidarity for a Free Palestine. \nWe are a group of educators\, advocates\, activists\, and creators who are all part of the early\nyears community. Our work is grounded in our values as early childhood educators\, joining in\nthe struggle against inequity\, powerlessness\, and oppression. Our goal is to create life-affirming\nconditions within our communities and our global world\, through collective action and education.\nDescription: \nIn the face of the unyielding genocide of Palestinians\, our commitment to a free Palestine\nremains unwavering. \nWe have seen an entire climate emerge to silence pro-Palestine activism. This is not a new\noccurrence\, but has been getting stronger and increasingly visible. From the criminalization of\nresistance and peaceful demonstration\, the implementation of shadow bans on social media\,\npeople being put on lists for speaking out\, the strain on relationships\, to the silence in\nclassrooms\, playrooms\, and at dinner tables. The suppression of solidarity and the risks we\nencounter are undeniably real. Amidst these risks\, we find ways to resist\, care\, gather in\ncommunity\, learn and unlearn\, take collective action\, and speak the truth to reclaim power\, while\nholding an ethic of care\, equity\, and justice in our practice. \nAs witnesses to the genocide in Palestine\, which has been visible on social media for many\nmonths\, it may be possible that feelings of hopelessness and despair contribute to a decrease\nin motivation to advocate for positive change and the feeling that what we are doing might not\nbe making a difference. \nThrough this session\, we want to convey the importance of ongoing engagement with advocacy\nfor a free Palestine\, and emphasize that this must be a collective effort to stand against\noppression and injustice. We will offer some ideas for action to advocate for a free Palestine\,\nand encourage participants to imagine their own advocacy actions. Our intention is that\nparticipants leave the session with a greater sense of community\, a curiosity to seek further\nknowledge\, and the motivation to continue supporting Palestinian liberation. \nThis session will address ways that our ECE values\, which regard all children as precious\, can\nserve as instruments of change\, while providing a different narrative that challenges the\ncommon messaging and misinformation about Palestine. \nWe invite you to join us to learn together and gather in community on January 18th from 7:30 –\n8:30 pm. EST on Zoom. Register here!

SUMMARY:Ottawa Solidarity for Gaza New Year's Eve vigil
DESCRIPTION:While thousands of people are getting ready to celebrate the New Year\, we will be at the Human Rights Monument on New Year’s Eve to remind ourselves that there is nothing to celebrate when a genocide unfolds before the eyes of the entire world. We will be here to tell the people of Gaza that we have not forgotten them and that we share their suffering. We will gather to commemorate the tens of thousands of innocents killed in Gaza\, and the only countdown we will accept is the one towards achieving a permanent ceasefire and the end of their occupation. Bring your flags\, koufeyyes and signs & stand with us in solidarity for the people of Palestine \n#Countdown2Ceasefire

SUMMARY:Queer Death Salon – Grieving Genocide
DESCRIPTION:Queer Death Salon is a community space for all 2SLGBTQIA+ people to come together to discuss death\, dying and grief. It is a facilitated drop-in virtual discussion space\, with the purpose of building connection\, skill\, and resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ people navigating end of life in our personal lives and in our communities. \nIn December\, our discussion topic is once again Grieving Genocide. \nThere are currently multiple active and ongoing genocides happining around the world\, and many of us have been awoken to that reality by the heart-wrenching first-hand accounts being shared by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank\, under ongoing “Israeli” occupation. \nThis session is for 2SLGBTQIA+ people who are impacted by all forms of grief for these mass deaths. \nSome questions to consider: \nHow easy or difficult is it for me to connect to my grief?\nHow are the people around me showing up to this moment?\nHow is my grief (in)validated by the media and my communities?\nWhat avenues are available for me to express my grief?\nHow am I supported in my grief?\nDo I have strategies for catalizing grief into action? \nParticipants are invited to bring related questions and stories of their own.

SUMMARY:World Aids Day | Day With(out) Art Screening
DESCRIPTION:Digital Arts Resource Centre and Qu’Art are proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2023 by presenting Everyone I Know Is Sick\, a program of five videos generating connections between HIV and other forms of illness and disability. \nThe program features newly commissioned work by Dorothy Cheung (Hong Kong)\, Hiura Fernandes & Lili Nascimento (Brazil)\, Beau Gomez (Canada/Philippines)\, Dolissa Medina & Ananias P. Soria (USA)\, and Kurt Weston (USA).\nInspired by a statement from Cyrée Jarelle Johnson in the book Black Futures\, Everyone I Know Is Sick examines how our society excludes disabled and sick people by upholding a false dichotomy of health and sickness. Inviting us to understand disability as a common experience rather than an exception to the norm\, the program highlights a range of experiences spanning HIV\, COVID\, mental health\, and aging. The commissioned artists foreground the knowledge and expertise of disabled and sick people in a world still grappling with multiple ongoing pandemics.
