SUMMARY:National March on Ottawa to Free Palestine!
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL MARCH ON OTTAWA TO FREE PALESTINE! \nOn November 25th at 1pm\, the Palestinian Youth Movement\, the Association of Palestinian Arab Canadians\, Labour for Palestine\, and the International League of Peoples’ Struggle in Canada will march on Parliament Hill\, Ottawa to demand an end to Canadian complicity in the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people and the colonization of Palestine. Over 1 month into the genocide\, with over 11\,000 Palestinians killed by Israel\, the Canadian government not only refuses to call for a ceasefire\, but continues to sell weapons that enable Israel’s massacres. \nWe are marching for an end to this genocide by demanding: \n An immediate ceasefire\n An end to Canada’s complicity in Israel’s war crimes\, genocide\, and colonization of Palestinian lands\n Lifting the siege on Gaza \nJoin us on November 25th for what is sure to be a historic march\, at a critical time for our movement for liberation. We call on Palestinians\, Arabs\, and people of conscience from all across Canada to make plans to travel to Ottawa on this day. When we show out in numbers and raise our voices together\, a people’s chorus becomes impossible for the Canadian government to ignore. \n***** \n RSVP: https://forms.gle/jjxYq5P22NuqrV4o9 \n Organizational endorsements: https://forms.gle/HqcryqW47JCawqNE7 \n Fundraiser: https://goodbricks.org/…/palestin…/ottawa-national-march \n More information on transportation soon! They will share their experience and knowledge\, and give insights into the creation of accessible event spaces. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a workshop to learn how to apply disability justice principles to their own events and meetings.\nThe organizers acknowledge the work of Sins Invalid in the creation of the disability justice framework and all the other grassroots groups and activists who have continued to nurture its development.\nAccessibility considerations for this event include:\n– Wheelchair accessible venue\n– Gender neutral washrooms\n– Quiet space\n– ASL interpretation available\n– In person\, virtual\, and asynchronous participation\n– Close to OC Transpo bus stops and accessible by Para Transpo\n– Masks required for in person \nUse the registration form to let us know if you have other access needs and we will work collaboratively to try and meet them: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfARRLcT_eeyj5_aWy0-poQe6EByFgFYiSZn_sgih4qx6WJ8w/viewform?usp=sf_link \nAbout the speakers:\nCameron Jette\nCameron Jette (he/they) is a trans\, neurodivergent and disabled drag performer\, multidisciplinary artist\, small business owner and community event planner. With his Bachelors of Arts in Human Rights and Social Justice from Carleton University\, and nearly a decade of experience with various non-profits across so-called Ottawa\, Cameron is passionate about community engagement\, program development and facilitation\, and community-focused event planning.\nIn October 2022\, as his drag alter-ego Boy Vey\, Cameron founded the Disability Drag Collective\, a global collective of disabled drag performers looking to create meaningful change in our communities. He has also recently began planning diverse community-focused events as Wheelie Productions\, where he focuses on creating spaces that prioritize accessibility\, and disability justice.\nWhen he is not working full-time as the Community Engagment Worker at Carlington Community Health Centre\, or balancing his many side projects\, he is also currently working towards completing his diploma in Event Planning from Centennial College\, where he hopes to graduate this upcoming summer! \nCamille Bérubé\nCamille (she/her) Bérubé is a queer disability activist and a retired three-time Paralympian in the sport of swimming. She graduated from the University of Ottawa in Organizational Communication with a minor in Gender and Feminist Studies. She holds more than a decade of experience in athlete advocacy in the sport sector. Her other areas of expertise include\, but are not limited to\, organizational culture\, disability representation as well as gender\, disability and sexuality. Camille now works as an Advisor for Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion and Accessibility at Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation where she uses her skill set as a catalyst for change in the museum sector. The 28-year old believes in the importance of being intentionally intersectional in any approach to social justice and equity. Accessibility and anti-ableism cannot be talked about separately from other systems of oppression and must be implemented in a transversal way at all times in order to reach true belonging and inclusion of disabled folks in every part of our social fabric.

SUMMARY:Caroline Shenaz Hossein: Voices from the Black Social Economy
DESCRIPTION:The School of Social Innovation and the Research Centre on Social Innovation and Transformation are thrilled to welcome Professor Caroline Shenaz Hossein to Saint Paul University on November 16th. Her talk\, The Banker Ladies: Voices from the Black Political Economy\, will highlight her recent work documenting savings groups and credit associations created by racialized women as a response to decades of financial racism at the hands of conventional financial institutions. \nMany of the dominant discourses and practices of social innovation and social economy lack a strong critical analysis to attend to questions of power and structural change. One manifestation of this is the erasure of Black and racialized leaders within historical and contemporary social innovation spaces. Black and racialized Canadians have played a pivotal role in social and solidarity economies in Canada\, yet these spaces continue to be seen and understood as primarily White spaces and activities (Hossein 2019). Professor Caroline Shenaz Hossein is one of the leading scholars challenging this erasure (Hossein 2019\, 2022)\, and her theoretical and practical work has been instrumental in building a greater recognition of the contributions of Black and racialized social entrepreneurs and social innovators. Hossein calls on social innovation researchers and practitioners to challenge the “White gaze” in social economy literature\, to explicitly centre the scholarships and lived experiences of Black and racialized perspectives. \nFree but please register as space is limited. \nAccessibility: \nThe Atelier has a barrier-free entry and an accessible\, gender-neutral washroom.\nPlease refrain from wearing any scented products.\nWe encourage you to wear a mask\, and will have masks available on site. \nCaroline Shenaz Hossein \nDr. Caroline Shenaz Hossein is a Canada Research Chair for Africana Development & Feminist Political Economy (tier 2). She is Associate Professor of Global Development as well as cross-appointed to the graduate programme of Political Science at the University of Toronto where she teaches the core development course to PhD students. She is Founder of Diverse Solidarity Economies (DISE) Collective and she holds an Ontario Early Researcher Award (2018-2025) and was previously funded by SSHRC (2017-2020). Hossein serves as board member to the International Association of Feminist Economics\, advisor to Oxford University Press\, editorial board member to the U.N. Task Force for the Social and Solidarity Economy\, Review for Black Political Economy and Kerala University’s Journal ‘Polity & Society’. Hossein is the author of ‘Politicized Microfinance’ (2016)\, co-author of ‘Critical Introduction to Business and Society’ (2017); editor of ‘The Black Social Economy’ (2018)\, co-editor of ‘Community Economies in the Global South’ (2022) and ‘Beyond Racial Capitalism: Cooperatives in the African Diaspora’ (2023). Her forthcoming books are ‘The Banker Ladies’ with University of Toronto Press and ‘Co-operativism’ with Cambridge University Press. Prior to becoming an academic\, she worked for 9 years in global non-profits and 8 years in consulting to the World Bank\, UNDP\, USAID\, IRC\, CIDA\, IADB\, and the Aga Khan Foundation. Join us for an incredible evening of music on Fri\, Nov 3\, 2023. \nTaking place at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (CDCC)\, and inside the historic and beautiful Sanctuary concert space\, audience members are in for a rare musical concert experience with an intimate performance by headliner Logan Staats\, the multi-award-winning Mohawk singer-songwriter and Indigenous rights advocate you’ll recognize as a past winner of CTV’s The Launch. Armed with his guitar and harmonica\, Staats’ haunting voice is sure to inspire. while Trevor Alguire\, a local favourite\, reminds us with his special blend of country-rock why the quality of life in rural Ontario is worth fighting for. We’re in good hands with host Adrian Harewood; who is an MC par excellence. Bringing together entertainment and social issues comes naturally to this award-winning former CBC Ottawa news anchor and professor at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication. \nPresented by the Coalition Against the Proposed Prison (CAPP)\, the concert will be a fundraiser with all proceeds going to support the legal challenge waged by Kemptville residents against the Ford government’s plan to build a 235-bed prison on farmland in Kemptville\, dramatically expanding the number of prison cells on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory in the Ottawa region. \nDoors open at 6:30 with a cash bar available. \nThe concert entrance for the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre is located at 290 Lisgar Street\, Ottawa\, ON. \nPlease spread the word\, invite your friends and family\, and join forces with us in sharing our message to stop Ford’s Kemptville prison\, save farmland\, and build communities\, not cages. \nAdditional Information About the Cause \nThe Legal Challenge \nIn August 2022\, two Kemptville residents\, Victor Lachance and Kirk Albert\, started a David vs. Goliath-style court battle with the Ford government in what is known as a Judicial Review\, arguing that the Ford government had violated their own planning rules in ramming the project through without consultation with our community or municipal council. The Judicial Review is challenging the legality of the government’s decision and is seeking a Prohibition Order that will stop the construction of the proposed prison. Earlier this spring\, we were successful in fighting off an attempt by the government to have the application dismissed. The Judicial Review is expected to be heard in 2024. \nA key supporter and player in pushing the prison plan through was area MPP and former Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark\, who has since been forced to resign for his violations of the Members’ Integrity Act in relation to a similar process of removal of Greenbelt lands for development. \nCAPP \nCAPP has been fighting the Ontario government’s plan since it was publicly announced in August 2020. The Ford government’s scheme to pave over farmland and lock up more people (especially poor\, Black\, Indigenous\, and other racialized persons\, community members experiencing poverty/mental health/drug use issues\, and homelessness)\, and its flagrant and ongoing anti-democratic actions have all driven our cause. We believe the hundreds of millions of dollars\, currently earmarked for the project\, are better invested in supports and services that actually enhance community health\, well-being\, and safety.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Experiences: Atmospheres of Violence and Miss Major Speaks
DESCRIPTION:Join Eric A. Stanley & Toshio Meronek in conversation as they present their books on Trans and Queer experiences in America. \nWednesday\, November 1\, 7:00 PM\nOctopus Books\, 116 Third Ave.\, Ottawa \nAdvances in LGBTQ rights in the recent past—marriage equality\, the repeal of Don’t Ask\, Don’t Tell\, and the expansion of hate crimes legislation—have been accompanied by a rise in attacks against trans\, queer and/or gender-nonconforming people of color. In Atmospheres of Violence\, theorist and organizer Eric A. Stanley shows how this seeming contradiction reveals the central role of racialized and gendered violence in the US. Rather than suggesting that such violence is evidence of individual phobias\, Stanley shows how it is a structuring antagonism in our social world. Drawing on an archive of suicide notes\, AIDS activist histories\, surveillance tapes\, and prison interviews\, they offer a theory of anti-trans/queer violence in which inclusion and recognition are forms of harm rather than remedies to it. In calling for trans/queer organizing and worldmaking beyond these forms\, Stanley points to abolitionist ways of life that might offer livable futures. \n“Atmospheres of Violence offers a generous and generative reminder that queer and trans lives have always been bigger and more brilliant than the deadly state that tries to frighten and cajole us. Out of a devastating archive\, Eric A. Stanley’s queer and trans stories rise beyond assimilation\, honoring our gorgeous survival and refusals as resistance.” — Tourmaline\, artist\, activist\, and writer \nMiss Major Griffin-Gracy is a veteran of the infamous Stonewall Riots\, a former sex worker\, and a transgender elder and activist who has survived Bellevue psychiatric hospital\, Attica Prison\, the HIV/AIDS crisis and a world that white supremacy has built. Miss Major Speaks by Toshio Meronek is both a document of her brilliant life–told with intimacy\, warmth and an undeniable levity-and a roadmap for the challenges black\, brown\, queer and trans youth will face on the path to liberation today. Her incredible story of a life lived and a world survived becomes a conduit for larger questions about the riddle of collective liberation. For a younger generation\, she warns about the traps of ‘representation\,’ the politics of ‘self-care\,’ and the frequent dead-ends of non-profit organizing; for all of us\, she is a strike against those who would erase these histories of struggle. Miss Major offers something that cannot be found elsewhere: an affirmation that our vision for freedom can and must be more expansive than those on offer by mainstream institutions. \n“The extraordinary insights in this book\, always punctuated by Miss Major’s razor-sharp wit\, allow us to understand how liberation movements for trans\, queer and other routinely marginalized people can hold the most emancipatory potential for all.” — Angela Davis\, author of Freedom Is a Constant Struggle \nEric A. Stanley is Associate Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and coeditor of Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility and Captive Genders: Trans Embodiment and the Prison Industrial Complex. \nToshio Meronek writes for publications including Al Jazeera\, The Nation\, and Truthout\, focusing on housing and queer politics.

SUMMARY:Protect Trans Kids (again)! Rally against anti-2SLGTBQIA+ hate!
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, anti-2SLGBTQIA+ activists are planning to rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on October 21st\, as well as in cities all across the country in a coordinated campaign against 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in the education system. \nWhile they claim to be in support of “parental rights\,” this is nothing more than yet another anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate rally\, and the policies they advocate for would bring harm to 2SLGBQIA+ and in particular trans youth. \nLocal protests are being led by Kamel El-Cheikh\, a virulently homophobic far-right activist who has threatened to “come after all your pride events” and “take all your pride flags down” on livestreams. Kamel also regularly accuses 2SLGBTQIA+ people of being pedophiles and perverts. \nThese protests come as Saskatchewan recently tabled a bill invoking the notwithstanding clause to pass anti-trans legislation that a judge had already found would cause irreparable harm. Recent comments from from Doug Ford as well as Education Minister Steven Lecce have floated similar policies in Ontario\, making it that much more important that we show our opposition to the anti-2SLGBTQIA+ agenda being pushed by the far right.. \nOnly a few weeks ago\, we came together and showed that the voices of these homophobic and transphobic bigots do not represent the majority and do not represent our community. We must come together once again anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate being pushed by the far right. \nThat’s why\, on October 21st\, we are going to be gathering in front of the Human Rights Memorial to show our support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and our opposition to the so-called “parents rights” agenda that is nothing more than thinly veiled homophobia and transphobia. \nAs always\, review the Safety Plan to see how to best keep yourself and your friends safe. In particular: \n\nDo not give interviews to far right media outlets or “independent journalists”\nDon’t debate far-right trolls. Drown them out with chants and noise! Especially if they are filming or livestreaming and looking for content.\nDo not film supporters without their permission\, and do not livestream. Do film the far right\, fake journalists\, and the police in order to protect yourself and your friends.\nProtect your identity. Mask up\, and use signs\, flags\, umbrellas\, etc.\, to protect yourself from being photographed by far right activists or fake news outlets.\nDo not talk to the police\nMaintain situational awareness\, and watch each others’ backs\nTry to arrive and leave as a group\nCheck the weather\, drive safely and dress appropriately! Give yourself plenty of time to arrive!\n\nWe are also encouraging people to contact their representatives – in particular school trustees and MPPs – to express their support for gender-affirming policies and inclusive education\, and their opposition to any policies that would forcibly out trans youth. \nFor additional information on who is behind these anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate rallies\, please see our (parody – but informative!) website 1 Million March for Children. \nPlease promote this event to your networks! If you are able to assist on the day of the event\, please contact us at communitysolidarityottawa@gmail.com

SUMMARY:When Political and Judicial Factors Collide: Dr. Hassan Diab tells his story
DESCRIPTION:October 19\, 2023 @12pm noon to 1pm in the Tory Building\, Room 360\, Carleton University and on Zoom (registration in advance required for Zoom webinar). Free.  \nThis is a public lecture by Hassan Diab. Presented by the Foundations in Community Engagement course (SOCI/ANTH 2180) and the Hassan Diab Support Committee. No registration required to attend in person. To attend on Zoom\, register in advance: https://carleton-ca.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UA_WG8b9Q0qrWsZgTzuvmQ  \nIn 2008\, Dr. Diab\, a sociologist teaching at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa\, was unjustly accused of being the perpetrator of a horrendous antisemitic bombing outside a synagogue in Paris in 1980. In 2014\, Dr. Diab was extradited from Canada to France\, where he spent over three years in prison. In 2018\, Hassan was released after two French investigative judges\, who thoroughly examined the case\, concluded that there is no evidence to justify a trial. They dropped all charges and released Hassan unconditionally.  \nDr. Hassan Diab will talk about how political realities in France subsequently resulted in a wrongful conviction. A 3-week trial in April 2023\, that brought forward no new evidence and relied on secret intelligence\, declared Hassan guilty. He is at risk of being extradited a second time to France for a crime he did not commit. Hassan’s case has been instrumental in prompting a Parliamentary review of Canada’s Extradition Law.\n \n For more information: JusticeforHassanDiab.org

The tour is presented by Send + Receive Festival\, Winnipeg; Music Gallery\, Toronto; Debaser\, Ottawa; Art in the Margins\, Montréal; and Western Front\, Vancouver between Oct 12 – 19\, 2023.\nBased in the Javanese cultural hub Yogyakarta\, Yes No Wave Music is an online label and platform to nurture Indonesian artists and promote their activities internationally. Founded by Wok the Rock in 2007\, the label is run with a DIY ethos to build a post-capitalist alternative to music industry norms. All music on the label is free to download\, distribute\, and even remix\, reflecting the Indonesian social value of sharing communal resources\, and the necessity for artists to develop their activities in spite of nominal government support and funding. In 2010\, Wok and Timothy O’Donoghue initiated the monthly concert series Yes No Club traveling throughout Southeast Asia and beyond. He subsequently co-curated Nusasonic in 2018-2022. These efforts fostered the international success of artists such as Senyawa\, Gabber Modus Operandi\, Raja Kirik\, and Asep Nayak.\nSince moving to Yogyakarta to study graphic design as a teenager\, Wok’s cultural activism has continued to grow over the past two decades. He co-founded art space Ruang MES 56\, curated the Biennale Jogja XIII in 2015\, and organized numerous community art projects. This informs his unique interdisciplinary practice of crossing boundaries of music and visual art.
