DESCRIPTION:Queer Death Salon is a community space for all 2SLGBTQIA+ people to come together to discuss death\, dying and grief. It is a facilitated drop-in discussion space\, with the purpose of building connection\, skill\, and resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ people navigating end of life in our personal lives and in our communities. \nIn this interactive workshop\, participants will explore and practice the concept of “Bid for Care” as a foundational element for building responsive and supportive communities. Drawing on principles of radical mental health and community care\, participants will learn practical strategies for recognizing bids for care\, assessing personal capacity to respond\, and cultivating a culture of mutual support. \noumou is a Senegalese-Guinean\, multi-hyphenate polycreative – therapist(ish)\, coach\, disruptor\, zinester\, writer\, speaker\, consultant and facilitator of spaces for radical learning. oumou is a two-time graduate of Syracuse University and a former adjunct professor at the same school. she is the creator of RMHFA\, a workshop that is slowly but surely changing the care and mental health landscape.

DESCRIPTION:On May 1st\, 1911\, the Socialist Party of Canada organized Ottawa’s first public celebration of Mayday with a rally and speakers in Major’s Hill Park. \nTo commemorate the 125th anniversary of that event\, the Ottawa branch of the Tempest Collective – an American/Canadian socialist group – is offering a free historical walking tour\, starting from Major’s Hill Park. Join us to learn about seven of the most dramatic protests and strikes in Ottawa’s history\, moments when the struggle intensified into serious rebellions. \nLed by Brian McDougall\, from Peoples’ History Walking Tours\, the tour will visit the sites of those seven episodes of mass struggle. Each of those moments surpassed the limitations of ‘normal’ strikes and protests to reveal the possibility of system change. In doing so\, they raised political questions that remain critical today.\n• How can we overcome the racial divisions in the working class?\n• How much capacity do the unorganized have to strike?\n• How do you build a general strike?\n• How does the ruling class co-opt protest movements?\n• What can rank and file workers do to overcome the conservatism of their union leaders?\n• How can single issue movements and campaigns attract support from other groups? \nThe tour will last about three hours\, and will end with a visit to a nearby pub. DESCRIPTION:How is science knowledge communicated and circulated? How does these norms effect what is considered Science? \nIn this month’s module of the Social Production of Science reading group\, we bring you “The Circulation of Science”. Here we will discuss the scientific journal\, the scientific conference\, and the peer review and granting process as methods of sharing scientific knowledge\, establishing\, and gatekeeping what is considered Science. We will also look to these places as site of intervention. \nOur discussion for Module 4 of the Social Production of Science series will take place on Monday\, April 27th at 8 pm EDT on zoom.\nWe will be discussing three readings:\n• Scientific Autonomy\, Public Accountability\, and the Rise of “Peer Review” in the Cold War United States\, by Melinda Baldwin\n• The Social Construction of Two Biologists’ Proposals by Greg Myers\n• The art of gathering: histories of international scientific conferences by Bigg et al. \nRegister at the link in our bio to get access to the readings and sign up for updates! DESCRIPTION:Join Cree poet and kêhtê-aya (Elder) Louise Bernice Halfe – Sky Dancer to celebrate the launch of wîhtamawik / Tell Them: On a Life of Inspiration\, a new collection of memoirs\, essays\, and poems. Louise will be joined in conversation by Omeasoo Wahpasiw. \nThe event will be held at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in their upstairs lobby. Doors open at 6:30pm\, program begins at 7pm. \nIn wîhtamawik / Tell Them\, Louise chronicles her childhood in a cabin on reserve\, through the Indian Residential School system\, and into her reclamation of her nêhiyaw language\, culture\, and spirituality. \nIn Cree\, inspiration is described as a sudden insight. It can come from visits from spirit\, from the charged reciprocal experience of being taught by Elders and teaching the next generation\, from speaking Cree\, which allows the poet to “somersault into memory\,” and from the practice of observing and being in relationship with the land as it “constantly gives birth to itself.” wîhtamawik / Tell Them is a stunning love song to nêhiyaw ways of knowing—ways which Halfe has spent her life working to reclaim from the violence of colonization\, in order to celebrate their survival and share their enduring teachings with future generations. \nLouise Bernice Halfe – Sky Dancer is an acclaimed nêhiyaw (Plains Cree) poet and writer from the Saddle Lake First Nation in Alberta. She has been the recipient of multiple awards and appointments for her work\, including the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal\, Saskatchewan Provincial Poet Laureate\, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal\, Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate\, King Charles III Coronation Medal\, and Member of the Order of Canada. \nOmeasoo Wahpasiw is nêhiyaw from the Treaty 6 territory located in Kisiskâciwan (Saskatchewan) with the Saddle Lake Cree Nation. With their voracious consumption\, unbridled resource exploitation\, and relentless obstruction of climate action\, they are rapidly undermining democracy and destroying the very viability of the earth for human life. \nTheir staggering power and hoarding of wealth have prompted a number of G20 nations to consider imposing a wealth tax\, aimed exclusively at the super-rich. In Canada\, such a tax would apply only to those with wealth above $25 million. Yet it could collect $40 billion a year — funding public programs that could immensely improve the lives of millions of Canadians while clipping the wings of the super-rich. \nBillionaires would threaten to depart. But as they left the country that had nourished them and enabled them to grow so wildly rich\, they’d face a hefty “exit tax” on the way out. \nYes\, change is possible. \nLinda McQuaig is the recipient of a National Newspaper Award for investigative reporting. The National Post has described her as “Canada’s Michael Moore.” She is also the author of eight national bestsellers\, including Shooting the Hippo\, selected by the Literary Review of Canada as one of the twenty-five most influential books of the past twenty-five years. Perhaps not surprisingly\, she has enraged many on the right\, including Conrad Black\, who called for her to be “horsewhipped.” \nNeil Brooks taught tax law and policy at Osgoode Hall Law School for over 35 years. SUMMARY:Opening event for "Art is a Weapon" Poster Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In 1930s Spain\, artists\, organizers\, unions\, and leftist political parties produced thousands of stunning posters promoting revolutionary social change and opposing fascism. In 1936\, the Spanish Civil War began when fascists organized a coup to overthrow Spain’s democratically-elected leftist Popular Front government\, composed of a coalition of socialists\, anarchists\, communists\, workers’ organizations and social movements. From 1936-38\, thousands of international volunteers\, including at least 1500 Canadians\, went to Spain to join the Popular Front in the fight against fascism. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy enthusiastically supported the coup\, and the fascists ultimately won\, installing a dictatorship that would last until the late 1970s. \nArt is a Weapon: Revolutionary and Antifascist Posters from Spain 1936-39 presents reproductions of more than 25 striking posters that teach us the history of revolutionary Spain and the Spanish Civil War. But these posters are more than just artefacts of the past. They illuminate a history that extends into the present moment and to struggles we continue to fight today\, from opposing fascism\, fighting for gender liberation\, defending children’s genuine health and well-being\, and defending the dignity and well-being of working people to fighting for environmental sustainability\, for public education and art\, and supporting international solidarity. \nThe exhibition also includes reproductions of artefacts from the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion\, the Canadian contingent of the International Brigades that fought against fascism in Spain.\nCurated by Claire Nicolson-Hurtig (@encrenoire.illustration\, Posters for Palestine 2024 exhibition\, member of Education for Liberation Collective) \nPosters are reproduced from the collections of the Fundacion Pablo Iglesias (Madrid\, Spain)\, the Robert D. Doors open at 6:30pm\, program begins at 7pm. \nAbout the book \nIn The Long Sixties\, seven veteran political activists from the sixties\, all still engaged in campaigns and organizations across Canada\, tell their stories of transformational activism. This book provides hope\, chronicling the significant gains — in advancing peace\, international human rights\, Indigenous rights\, women’s and 2SLGBTQ+ rights\, workers’ rights\, and environmental protection. Weathered voices open an intergenerational conversation about social solidarity and transformation to address the grave crises we face globally and nationally\, including climate catastrophe\, escalating warfare\, extreme wealth inequality\, ethno-nationalism and a heightened continental threat to Canada’s sovereignty. \nJoan Newman Kuyek is a writer\, researcher and community organizer living in Ottawa. In 1965-70\, she worked with the Kingston Community Project (KCP)\, which was instrumental in getting changes to the Landlord and Tenant Act and establishing the first Legal Clinic in Ontario. She has been an organizer all her life\, living in Sudbury from 1970 to 1999 and then in Ottawa as community-focused mining activist. In Sudbury\, she helped organize Women Helping Women\, Wives Supporting the Strike and Better Beginnings Better Futures Project. She was also a founding National Coordinator of MiningWatch Canada. She is the author of many articles and four books that share her learnings form these experiences. \nLib Spry has been theatre-maker for over sixty years as a director\, writer\, producer\, educator\, and translator\, specializing in political\, non-traditional\, clown and physical theatre. She is a recognized teacher of Theatre of the Oppressed. She has founded three theatre companies: Theatre Agile (2011 to present)\, Passionate Balance (1989-1996) and\, with Shirley Barrie\, the award-winning Straight Stitching Productions (1986-1993). She has published in Canadian Theatre Review\, Theatre Research in Canada/Recherches théâtrales au Canada\, alt.theatre\, and has a chapter in the book Playing Boal. DESCRIPTION:Healthcare workers and community members will gather to mark Palestinian Prisoners’ Day and to demand the immediate release of thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. \nWHEN: Friday\, April 17\, 2026 at 5:00PM\nWHERE: Human Rights Monument\, Ottawa\, ON\nWHO: Health Workers Alliance for Palestine (HAP)\, alongside the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM)\, Ottawa Healthcare Professionals for Palestine (OHCP4P)\, Doctors Against Genocide (DAG)\, Jews Say No to Genocide (JSNTG)\, GLIA Equal Care\, and community supporters are organizing this vigil to demand immediate action. \nThe zionist settler colonial entity has long used incarceration\, forced disappearance and imprisonment as a way to break up Palestinian families and communities. Political prisoners\, who face colonial violence every day are at the forefront of resistance\, and are at the centre of the struggle for liberation. \nOver 9500 Palestinian political prisoners are currently detained\, including over 350 children. Palestinian children are the only children in the world who are prosecuted in military courts without due process or held in administrative detention with no charge at all. There are at least 91 health care workers\, many of whom were abducted directly from hospitals and ambulances\, seized while treating patients and refusing to abandon the wounded. While in prison\, Palestinian political prisoners are subject to torture\, and neglect at the hands of zionist captors including health care workers. Canada and its institutions including the health sector are complicit through diplomatic and material support to Israel. \nThe urgency is compounded by a bill advancing in the Israeli Knesset that seeks to legalize the execution of Palestinian prisoners. \nWe demand\n* Immediate release of all Palestinian political prisoners\, including healthcare workers\n* An end to administrative detention\, torture\, and medical abuse\n* An end to Canada’s complicity in Israeli occupation and genocide\nWe also demand immediate access to legal representation\, family visits\, health care\, and access to water\, food and hygiene.
