SUMMARY:Online Intro Talk: Stop Canada Burning Down
DESCRIPTION:Canada is burning and life as we know it is falling apart. Extreme weather events and mass species extinction cover the globe. And government has failed to implement the radical change we need.\n\nIn this talk\, we will tell the truth about the state of the climate – including the hard truths that people in power don’t want you to know. \nAnd most importantly\, we will talk about the social science of radical change and how YOU can make it happen! There is a long history of movements that have forced those in power to make change – through bottom-up people power. \nYou will get the chance to connect with people who are involved in the movement. People who have been arrested\, have done hunger strikes\, and have risked a lot to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience – following in the footsteps of movements of the past\, like the civil rights movement and movements for the right to vote. \nCome learn about what YOU can do – and what we all MUST do – to avoid the worst effects of climate breakdown and create a livable future. \nRegistration: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMoce2grjgiH9ERJkCiPIap_xjTJe_r6s4r

SUMMARY:When Political and Judicial Factors Collide: Dr. Hassan Diab tells his story
DESCRIPTION:October 19\, 2023 @12pm noon to 1pm in the Tory Building\, Room 360\, Carleton University and on Zoom (registration in advance required for Zoom webinar). Free.  \nThis is a public lecture by Hassan Diab. Presented by the Foundations in Community Engagement course (SOCI/ANTH 2180) and the Hassan Diab Support Committee. No registration required to attend in person. To attend on Zoom\, register in advance: https://carleton-ca.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UA_WG8b9Q0qrWsZgTzuvmQ  \nIn 2008\, Dr. Diab\, a sociologist teaching at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa\, was unjustly accused of being the perpetrator of a horrendous antisemitic bombing outside a synagogue in Paris in 1980. In 2014\, Dr. Diab was extradited from Canada to France\, where he spent over three years in prison. In 2018\, Hassan was released after two French investigative judges\, who thoroughly examined the case\, concluded that there is no evidence to justify a trial. They dropped all charges and released Hassan unconditionally.  \nDr. Hassan Diab will talk about how political realities in France subsequently resulted in a wrongful conviction. A 3-week trial in April 2023\, that brought forward no new evidence and relied on secret intelligence\, declared Hassan guilty. He is at risk of being extradited a second time to France for a crime he did not commit. Hassan’s case has been instrumental in prompting a Parliamentary review of Canada’s Extradition Law.\n \n For more information: JusticeforHassanDiab.org

Founded by Wok the Rock in 2007\, the label is run with a DIY ethos to build a post-capitalist alternative to music industry norms. All music on the label is free to download\, distribute\, and even remix\, reflecting the Indonesian social value of sharing communal resources\, and the necessity for artists to develop their activities in spite of nominal government support and funding. In 2010\, Wok and Timothy O’Donoghue initiated the monthly concert series Yes No Club traveling throughout Southeast Asia and beyond. He subsequently co-curated Nusasonic in 2018-2022. These efforts fostered the international success of artists such as Senyawa\, Gabber Modus Operandi\, Raja Kirik\, and Asep Nayak.\nSince moving to Yogyakarta to study graphic design as a teenager\, Wok’s cultural activism has continued to grow over the past two decades. He co-founded art space Ruang MES 56\, curated the Biennale Jogja XIII in 2015\, and organized numerous community art projects. This informs his unique interdisciplinary practice of crossing boundaries of music and visual art.

SUMMARY:Critical Mass bike ride
DESCRIPTION:How the ride works: \n1. Show up before 6 \n2. Start circling the fountain at 6pm\, and follow whoever leaves first \n3. Ride around slowly on streets without bike lanes\, take up the entire car lane. If it’s a 2-lane road\, stick to just one lane unless it’s a big group. \n4. Whoever is in front leads the group\, but also places their bike to block cars when the group is crossing an intersection \n5. The group must stay together for safety – it’s literally the name of the ride. If a traffic light turns red after the leaders\, the tail of the group must run the light. If the light is red when the leaders get to it\, stop and wait. There is no rush\, no reason to run lights unnecessarily. \n6. Be super friendly\, make friends\, have fun\, smile and wave at drivers\, and maybe just accept that rain isn’t so bad on a hot day

SUMMARY:Kidical Mass Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:Experience the joy of biking through the eyes of children and join the worldwide movement calling for child-friendly streets \nKidical Mass is an international movement inspired by ‘critical mass’ events held to emphasize the number of people who want to ride bikes and to demand infrastructure improvements. Kidical mass expands on that idea with a focus on children and families. These events celebrate the joy of biking while calling for a need to create streets that are safe for kids and therefore safe for everyone. We believe children should be able to safely and independently travel to school\, parks\, sports\, and other destinations. With climate change already impacting the lives of children\, safe streets for kids also means seriously addressing the climate emergency. There are measures – both big and small – that cities like Ottawa can pursue to make this possible (some of our ideas are below). \nThis event is hosted by Bike Ottawa\, For Our Kids Ottawa-Gatineau and School Streets Ottawa in collaboration with other kidical mass events taking place around the world on the weekend of September 23-24. Join more than 150\,000 other people celebrating the joy of children and biking and the need to make streets safer for kids. \nSchedule\n9:30 – 10:00: Meet at Sylvia Holden Children’s Park (641 O’Connor Street)\, decorate bikes\, dance\, chalk\, and bubbles\n10:05-11:00: Ride begins – We will ride along Queen Elizabeth Drive (closed to cars) to Confederation Park (3.2km)\n11:00 – 12:00: Prize draw\, activities and play at the park. Participants are encouraged to bring snacks or picnics. \nEveryone is welcome! We hope to have participants of all ages\, abilities\, and caretaking responsibilities (that means you too grandparents\, aunts\, uncles\, babysitters\, and community members who love kids!). Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult and are welcome to ride their own bikes or on board with another rider. We will be travelling at a very slow pace. Whether your child is a pro on two wheels or just starting out\, this event is perfect for riders of all ages and skill levels. Don’t forget to bring your helmets! \nBright colourful clothing and accessories are encouraged. We will have some bike decorations\, but you are encouraged to bring your own as well! Let’s come together as a community\, promote cycling\, and create lasting memories. So mark your calendars and get ready for a wheely good time at Kidical Mass Ottawa ! \nRegistration is not required\, but it is encouraged so we can get in touch if there are any updates to the event (e.g.\, weather issues\, travel disruptions\, etc.) \nWe are seeking volunteers and donations (prizes\, snacks\, bike decorations\, and services including videography/photography and children’s entertainment). Are you a bike-friendly or kid-friendly individual or business that would like to be involved with this event? Please reach out to us at kidicalmassottawa@gmail.com. \nAbout the Event Hosts: \nBike Ottawa is a not-for-profit volunteer-based advocacy group. We believe riding a bike in Ottawa should be a fun\, safe\, and easy choice for all ages and abilities. We are committed to advocating for a vibrant and equitable Ottawa where active transportation plays an important role in year-round mobility. \nFor Our Kids Ottawa Gatineau is a community of parents\, grandparents and families who are concerned about climate change. We organize family-friendly activism and information activities and provide a space to connect and take action together. We strive to be a welcoming place for all parents\, guardians\, grandparents\, caregivers\, and community members to connect and act together. This summer we hosted several “We Bike For Our Kids” events encouraging families to bike for transportation. \nSchool Streets Ottawa is a coalition of local volunteers along with supporting organizations who advocate for kids to have healthy and safe ways to get to school. Our mission is to have more students using travel modes that are active\, safe\, and sustainable. \nQuestions about the event can be sent to kidicalmassottawa@gmail.com

SUMMARY:OPIRG-Carleton RadFrosh: Activism\, Investigative Work Needed In Face of Challenging Consumer and Community Issues
DESCRIPTION:Ken Rubin will first talk about several challenging key consumer and community issues to be met and then provide examples of his investigative and FOI experiences. This will be followed by questions and a discussion on why activism and investigative work matter. \nKen Rubin is an Ottawa investigative public interest researcher\, a citizens’ advocate\, an author\, a civil libertarian\, and an organic farmer. He is a very well known commentator on the access and privacy legislation in Canada. He has filed and analyzed thousands of requests for public and personal information. His work has resulted in hundreds of media stories. He has written and published many articles and reports on government secrecy and privacy and surveillance practices. He has acted as an access consultant to a variety of media\, public interest groups\, political parties\, labour unions\, research groups\, trade associations\, and individuals. SUMMARY:You're Invited: Tipping Point for Advanced Capitalism Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Political Economy\, Carleton University\, and the Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives are excited to announce a book launch for David Livingstone’s 2023 Tipping Point for Advanced Capitalism: Class\, Class Consciousness\, and Activism in the “Knowledge Economy “\, published by Fernwood Press. \nThe event will be held on September 20\, 2023\, from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Senate Room\, Rm 608\, Pigiarvik\, with remarks from Dr. Livingstone and a conversation on the book stimulated by activist readers from the Ottawa community. Please RSVP here: https://carleton.ca/politicaleconomy/fall-2023-ipe-book-launch/ \nTipping Point for Advanced Capitalism is a pathbreaking study of the changing class makeup of the Canadian\, other G7 and Nordic labour forces since the 1980s\, documenting especially the rise of non-managerial professional employees. The book provides unprecedented tracking of the links between employment classes and higher levels of class consciousness\, including the often hidden political consciousness of corporate capitalists as well as the extent of oppositional and revolutionary consciousness among non-managerial workers. The large differences exposed between class conscious capitalists and these non-managerial workers on issues of poverty reduction and global warming reveal the strategic roles these key class agents play in actions to defend or transform advanced capitalism. The most concerted evidence-based study to bring class back into grasping the intimately linked ecological\, economic and political crises we now face. The TPAC book is now available for order: https://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/tipping-point-for-advanced-capitalism.

SUMMARY:Protect Trans Kids! Rally against anti-2SLGTBQIA+ hate!
DESCRIPTION:This coming Wednesday\, September 20th\, anti-2SLGBTQIA+ activists plan to rally on Parliament Hill as well as in a number of cities across the country for a so-called “Million Person March.” While they claim to be in support of “parental rights\,” this is nothing more than yet another anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate rally. \nMany of the people behind this hateful protest are familiar faces from previous anti-2SLGBTQIA+ mobilizaions in Ottawa – homophobic and transphobic activist Kamel El-Cheikh\, anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate group Save Canada\, as well as the usual gathering of homophobic convoy activists and other far-right networks. \nGiven the recent policy changes in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick targeting trans youth\, and recent comments from Doug Ford as well as Education Minister Steven Lecce floating similar policies in Ontario\, it is important that we come together at this time to show that the voices of these homophobic and transphobic bigots do not represent the majority and do not represent our community. \nThat’s why\, at the same time as they are gathering on Parliament Hill\, we are going to be gathering in front of the Supreme Court of Canada to show our support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and our opposition to the so-called “parents rights” agenda that is nothing more than thinly veiled homophobia and transphobia. \nWe’ve beaten the far right before\, and with your support\, we can do so again. \nWe will be joined by our allies from Horizon Ottawa\, the Ottawa District Labour Council\, as well as a number of unions and community groups who have come together to send a message of solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. \nAs always\, review the Safety Plan to see how to best keep yourself and your friends safe. In particular: \n\nDo not give interviews to far right media outlets or “independent journalists”\nDon’t debate far-right trolls. Drown them out with chants and noise! Especially if they are filming or livestreaming and looking for content.\nDo not film supporters without their permission\, and do not livestream. Do film the far right\, fake journalists\, and the police in order to protect yourself and your friends.\nProtect your identity. Mask up\, and use signs\, flags\, umbrellas\, etc.\, to protect yourself from being photographed by far right activists or fake news outlets.\nDo not talk to the police\nMaintain situational awareness\, and watch each others’ backs\nTry to arrive and leave as a group\nCheck the weather\, drive safely and dress appropriately! Give yourself plenty of time to arrive!\n\nWe are also encouraging people to contact their representatives – in particular school trustees and MPPs – to express their support for gender-affirming policies and inclusive education\, and their opposition to any policies that would forcibly out trans youth. \nFor additional information on who is behind these anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate rallies\, please see our (parody – but informative!) website 1 Million March for Children.

SUMMARY:Prime Minister Trudeau\, get it done! Regularize everyone!
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa is joining the actions taking place across the country to demand equality\, justice and permanent resident status for all! \nPlease RSVP now so we can share the plans with you!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are not in Ottawa\, please scroll below to see the full list of actions. \nWe are marching because in this crisis of inequality\, we need to link struggles for climate justice\, affordability\, housing and human rights and migrant justice. No one must be left behind. \nWe are marching because migrants — the very people who grow food\, care for the sick\, build our homes\, and keep society functioning — bear some of the heaviest burden of exclusion\, \nWe are marching because Parliament returns on September 18\, 2023 and we must remind Prime Minister Trudeau of his December 2021 promise to ensure regularization of undocumented people and permanent resident status for all. \n  \nRight now\, anti-immigrant sentiment is rising. This time\, migrants are being blamed for increasing housing prices. We must take to the streets and refuse to be divided. Together\, let us demand justice and equality for all.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore actions are being announced everyday\, see www.MigrantRights.ca/Sep17 for the latest.

SUMMARY:Book launch: Quitting the Master Race: A Daughter's Journey to Break the Bonds of Hate
DESCRIPTION:Help celebrate the launch of Quitting the Master Race: A Daughter’s Journey to Break the Bonds of Hate\, by local author Barbara Leimsner www.barbaraleimsner.com \nHow do otherwise decent people become mesmerized by a doctrine of hate? The author confronts the past to discover how one ordinary man—her adored German papa—in his youth became thoroughly indoctrinated with Nazi ideology. Its hateful tentacles reached into her young life as he filled her head with beliefs about Aryan superiority\, racist stereotypes\, and conspiracy theories. \nThis thoughtful\, compelling book will appeal to anyone concerned about resurging far-right ideologies today\, and those interested in the rise of fascism in the 1930s. It will speak to readers with parents or grandparents in WWII\, and those interested in the immigrant experience\, issues of intergenerational memory\, and identity. \nWhat readers are saying: \n“I enjoyed it immensely.” \n“I was mesmerized right from the start.” \n“. . . masterfully written with penetrating insight and the pacing of a mystery novel.” \n“I couldn’t stop reading it.” \nAvailable at independent bookstores and through Chapters Indigo and Amazon. \nCome support a local author and celebrate a good book! \n(Parking at the library or on nearby streets. Seating is limited so please come early.)

SUMMARY:International Day of Protest Against ABA
DESCRIPTION:August 31st is the International Day of Protest Against ABA\, a day of action for Autistic self-advocates to stand in opposition to Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy. \nABA was pioneered in the 1960s by Ole Ivar Løvaas\, a psychologist who also published work developing gay conversion therapy. Since Autistic people are disproportionately 2SLGBTQIA+ and ABA is methodologically similar to gay conversion therapy\, many Autistic people refer to ABA as “Autistic conversion therapy.” Both therapies are based in behaviourism\, using rewards and punishments to discourage behavioural differences and teaching patients to place the approval of others over their own well-being. \nFor these reasons as well as the lived experiences of Autistic people who have undergone ABA\, we will be hosting a protest on August 31st at 6 pm EST at the Human Rights Monument outside of City Hall. \nAutistic Liberation Now!\nAbolish ABA!\nNothing About Us Without Us! \nLink to the ANLFO Discord Server for anyone who would like to join: https://discord.gg/VauzZzpmNG

Yet\, our city council only approved $16 million on building new affordable homes.\n\nWe know we can do better – Currently the city spends $40 million on shelters\, and we think at least the same should be spent on permanent\, deeply affordable housing so we can start tackling the root cause.\n\nThat’s why this June we launched our petition to double the housing budget and we have gotten thousands of signatures – to finish up our Summer Canvassing Series and transition into the Fall we will be holding one final Day of Action to door knock across the Carlington!\n\nPlease RSVP using this link:\nhttps://www.horizonottawa.ca/aug28_dayofaction
