Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area\, Kebaowek First Nation\, Sierra Club Canada and the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility took Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to court and WON . . . but CNL has appealed.\nJOIN US as CNL’s appeal is heard\, and citizen groups and First Nations again argue before a judge why the law must be respected.\nA judge said that Environment Canada should not have issued a “Species at Risk Permit” for the radioactive waste dump to be built on CNL’s chosen site near the Ottawa River\, where it will destroy habitat for protected and endangered species. CNL is a creation of and funded by the federal government – so it’s the feds fighting citizens in Federal Court.\nJoin us from Noon to 2 PM in front of 90 Sparks St. Do it for the endangered bats\, songbirds\, turtles\, Eastern wolves and bears living on the site of the future radioactive megadump!\nMany of these animals are sacred to Indigenous peoples\, as is the Kichi Sibi. Ten of the 11 Algonquin First Nations are opposed to the project\, and a Federal Court judge agreed that free\, prior and informed consent was not respected.\nMore than 140 municipalities are also opposed. Canadian taxpayers are footing the multi-billion-dollar bill\, but a corporate consortium is calling the shots. Coming from various areas of experience and musical backgrounds\, the musicians learned to master new ways of hearing\, performing\, and thinking about music.  \nMentored by a rotating roster of international guest musicians\, the 12 musicians are a shining representative of Toronto’s unique sonic landscape. The Labyrinth Ensemble boasts a wide range of instruments from santur to gayageum to lyra \, forming a rich palette\, and opening up unlimited possibilities for creation and collaboration. \nNow on their seventh intensive\, the Ensemble has become deeply attuned to the idioms of modal music\, showcasing each member’s unique voice through improvisation. SUMMARY:What's the winter plan to ensure no one dies in the cold? Rally and petition
DESCRIPTION:This past year\, the City of Ottawa closed the emergency overnight shelters held at Bernard Grand Maître Arena\, Dempsey Community Centre\, Heron Road Community Centre\, and the Graham Spry Building under the premise of having created capacity within Ottawa’s existing shelter system. \nOttawa’s shelters have approximately 950 beds and Ottawa’s homeless population is nearing 3\,000. There are drop-in facilities\, including HART Hubs\, Belong Ottawa\, and Centre 507 but they do not offer places to sleep. Their hours and capacity are also limited and can be inconsistent. \nThe City’s 10 Year Housing and Homelessness Plan set out to have “no one unsheltered” by the end of 2024. Kale Brown\, Ottawa’s Manager of Homelessness Programs and Shelters\, insists there is a warm bed for everyone. However\, front-line workers and unhoused neighbors know that most of the resources celebrated by the City are simply not enough. In addition\, as of October 2025\, Ottawa Public Health irresponsibly lists outdated overflow shelters that have been permanently closed. There are currently no clear\, dignified solutions to ensure that nobody suffers or dies in the cold. \nLocal politicians think they will solve homelessness in Ottawa by quoting the City’s false promises instead of listening to the realities of unhoused folks\, their loved ones\, and front-line workers on the ground. We urgently need multiple warming centres that: \n– Remain open from the 20th of December 2025 to the 20th of March of 2026 (staffed by experienced and trauma-informed workers\, operated 24 hours 7 days a week) \n– Have sleep capacity in the form of beds\, cots\, or mats (making people sleep on chairs is inhumane) \n– Apply the City’s own shelter standards of equity and inclusion to these facilities \nHave several accessible locations (with transport available for service users) \nLeave no one behind (which means no one turned away) \nThis winter\, without proper emergency solutions in place\, our unhoused community members and loved ones will continue to suffer serious injuries or die. \nNo more unloading of a governmental responsibility onto non-profit and precariously funded organizations. No more empty talk. No more excuses. We need concrete actions and a guaranteed winter plan by November 26th 2025 so we can trust a plan will be operational in time as the weather gets colder. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 19 at 4 pm to demand an immediate winter plan and a commitment to opening warming centres from the City of Ottawa. We will be reading the names of the many transgender people who have been killed through violence this past year\, and holding space for our community to grieve. DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa Police Service is set to receive an increase of $26.1 million in 2026 bringing their total net operating budget to an astounding $414.9 million. Meanwhile\, social services and community supports that are necessary for building safe and equitable communities are left detrimentally underfunded in this city.\n\nFor example\, the Ottawa City Budget 2026 allocates increases of:\n•     $2.2 million for essential health and social supports;\n•     $2 million for social housing;\n•     $1.4 million (inflationary increase) for the Ottawa Community Housing Safer Communities\, Homelessness Prevention Program\, emergency shelters and facility costs.\n\nThis is mere pennies compared to the nearly half billion dollars we will funnel into the OPS next year.\n\nIn response\, we are holding a protest at the Human Rights Monument on November 24th at 4pm to demand that the city of Ottawa reconsider the 2026 OPS Budget and begin to build real community safety through the reallocation of the $26 million increase proposed for police into stable housing\, accessible care\, community support\, and meaningful investment in people.\n\nPlease see the attached poster for event details and feel free to share within your networks. But as inequality grows\, the climate emergency worsens\, and global power shifts\, it’s clear that neoliberalism’s basic tenets – privatization\, public service cuts\, tax breaks for big business\, and corporate deregulation – have failed to meet today’s challenges. \nIn Breaking Free of Neoliberalism\, Alex Himelfarb traces how these ideas became entrenched in Canadian governance and explores how we can chart a new course. Drawing on his experience as a public servant and policy thinker\, Himelfarb calls for a renewed understanding of the public good and the crucial role government must play in shaping a just and sustainable future. \nCo-sponsored by the Institute of Political Economy at Carleton University and the Canadian Union of Public Employees. \nAlex Himelfarb joined the federal public service in 1981 after a decade teaching at the University of New Brunswick. SUMMARY:Collaborative zine making night at the OTL
DESCRIPTION:Come work on zines with us as we work on the next issue of The Dragon Flyer\, the Ottawa Trans Library’s community zine. Write\, draw\, scan\, cut\, and paste with us on our community zine or your own project\, or just come hang out with us. We are collecting stories\, jokes\, poems\, art\, and more from the trans and non-binary community in Ottawa and our friends and families. \nThe zine workshop is a collaborative event to discuss\, share\, and work on zines together. \nCome tell your story.We will provide paper\, templates\, and whatever art supplies we have. No experience necessary. All ages welcome\, children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. \nMasking the day of the event is encouraged. Accessibility note: There are two stairs at the door entrance. We have a ramp we can bring out for the door on request. There’s a washroom but it’s not large enough for many mobility devices.
