DESCRIPTION:Video Camp for Girls+ is a 2-week Summer Camp program that provides youth aged 13-17 with hands-on video production training. Topics include camera and audio basics\, shooting techniques\, lighting techniques\, and an introduction to video editing in DaVinci Resolve. Participants will learn how to handle equipment\, set up for video shoots\, and will work together in small groups to produce short videos that will be screened at the end of the 2-week program. \nWomen\, girls\, gender non-conforming people\, and non-binary youth are often overlooked in the field of filmmaking\, and this program aims to break this stereotype. We therefore encourage registration from trans\, non-binary\, and gender non-conforming youth.

DESCRIPTION:Prodigious Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar boldly reforges contemporary Saharan music and “rock music“ by melding Eddie Van Halen pyrotechnics\, full-blast noise and guitar shredding\, field recordings\, drums rhythms\, poetic meditations on love\, religion\, women’s rights\, inequality and Western Africa’s exploitation at the hands of colonial powers to rip a new hole in the sky with the Afrique Victime album. \nSiaka Diabate is a musician from Burkina Faso. His main instrument is the Kora\, a West African harp\, which he also made himself. His songs are mainly in Djoula\, one of the main languages of Burkina Faso\, and he loves singing about the most important thing in the world – love. Together with his group in Ottawa they combine traditional music with modern rhythms and rock the stage! Kora music is beautiful\, sometimes calm and perfect for relaxing and sometimes full of energy for dancing!

Ottawa. 6:00 – 7:00pm (ends at 9:30pm). \nYou are invited to a presentation by the artists of the project “Land : echos and dissonances”\, with Jobena Petonoquot\, Craig Commanda\, Mathieu Gagnon and Mathilde Forest\, organized as part of the Dialogues: Encounters with Riopelle’s Oeuvre from Sea to Sea. The artists will talk about their creative process and the artworks they are presenting as a result of this cultural mediation project organized by the Atelier d’innovation sociale. It was organized in together with the Atelier d’innovation sociale Mauril-Bélanger\, an organization working for justice and social transformation. \nThis collaboration was marked by two walks and a workshop that enabled citizens to rediscover two historic sites in the midst of major urban transformations. On May 13\, the poet and Kitigan Zibi Elder Albert Dumont led a walk to recount the cultural significance and sacredness of the Akikodjiwan site (Chaudiere Falls) to the Anishinaabe Nation. The May 14 event\, with historian Michel Prévost and followed by a discussion workshop\, explored the history and multiple transformations\, past and future\, of the LeBreton Flats and Chaudiere Falls\, an area that was also important to the capital’s French-speaking community. \nNature\, the post-industrial urban setting and the democratic process were at the heart of the discussions at this workshop. These encounters opened up a dialogue between citizens of different generations and cultures about the transformations of the landscape caused by the major real estate projects underway in the capital. \nDrawing on these issues to varying degrees\, artists were invited to create an artistic restitution inspired by these topics. Le 13 mai\, Albert Dumont\, poète et aîné de Kitigan Zibi a guidé une marche pour raconter l’importance culturelle et l’aspect sacré du site d’Akikodjiwan (Chutes des Chaudières) pour la Nation Anichinabée. \nL’évènement du 14 mai\, en compagnie de l’historien Michel Prévost et suivi d’un atelier de discussion\, a fait découvrir l’histoire et les multiples transformations passées et à venir des plaines LeBreton et des chutes des Chaudières\, un secteur qui fût également important pour la communauté francophone de la capitale. \nLa nature\, le cadre urbain post-industriel et le processus démocratique étaient au centre des échanges soulevés lors de cet atelier de discussion. Ces rencontres ont en effet permis d’entamer un dialogue entre des citoyen.ne.s de générations et de cultures différentes à propos des transformations du paysage causés par les grands projets immobiliers en cours dans la capitale. S’inspirant de ces questions à divers degrés\, les artistes ont été invités à effectuer une restitution artistique inspirés ces enjeux. Par leur différentes démarchent iels amènent des visions qui leurs sont propres\, par des pratiques à la fois traditionnelles et réactualisées telle que le perlage autochtone contemporain\, ou encore par les outils photographiques ou technologiques tel que la modélisation 3D. \nFaisant écho au legs de Jean Paul Riopelle\, les œuvres des artistes interrogent autant le paysage\, la nature et le sacré : le territoire urbain est analysé dans les images de Mathieu Gagnon\, il est traité comme un motif dans le travail de Mathilde Forest\, alors que d’une matérialité maitrisée un bestiaire est évoqué chez Craig Commanda\, puis un symbolisme amené par Jobena Petonoquot.

She speaks Arabic\, French\, and English fluently and holds a doctorate in finance. Monia was catapulted onto the public stage in 2002 when her husband\, Maher Arar\, was deported to Syria where he was tortured and held without charge for over a year. She campaigned vigorously for her husband’s release and later fought to re-establish his reputation and sought reparations. Her book\, Hope and Despair\, details the account of the family’s ordeal. She is also the author of two novels\, Mirrors and Mirages\, and Hope Has Two Daughters. Another novel\, Farida\, is forthcoming. She lives in Ottawa. \nAdrian Harewood has been a journalist for over a quarter century. He was the anchor of CBC Ottawa News at Six for 13 years\, and previously hosted CBC Ottawa’s radio show All in a Day for 3 years. Harewood joined Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication in 2021\, where he created the school’s first-ever course focused on race\, a graduate seminar called Journalism\, Race and Diversity. He also created the first course in Canada devoted to the study of the History of Black Canadian Journalism.

DESCRIPTION:Anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate group Save Canada has partnered with celebrity anti-trans activist “Billboard Chris” Elston for a rally and march in front of our schools on June 9th. They plan to meet at Broadview and Carling at 11:00 am\, and then march up Broadview to spread anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate in front of three schools on Broadview (Notre Dame High School\, Broadview Public School\, and Nepean High School). \n“Billboard Chris” is a notorious anti-trans activist who travels around North America to spread hate and instigate conflict at queer events\, and who participated in the convoy occupation of Ottawa. Save Canada are a Diagolon-affiliated far-right youth group which has marched with neo-Nazis outside of schools and drag storytime events across Ontario. Their main spokesperson\, Josh Alexander\, is a high school student from Renfrew who was expelled for bullying transgender students. \nFortunately\, we have a secret weapon – the power of community. In 2021\, Billboard Chris was chased out of town by 2SLGBTQIA+ folks and allies. This past February\, Save Canada partnered with our local far right and convoy remnants to shut down a drag storytime event at the National Arts Centre\, where they failed miserably as 300 community members showed up to protect the event. \nWhile we can not be complacent\, Ottawa has learned over the past two years that if we mobilize effectively\, we can defeat the far right. As such\, we are supporting local parents and community members in their plans to oppose these far-right anti-2SLGBTQIA+ instigators. Show up early\, and bring signs\, flags\, banners\, and noisemakers to drown out their hate. \nDrown out hate! Defend trans kids!\nJune 9th\, 10:00 am\nBroadview and Wellesley\n(one block north of Carling) \nIMPORTANT: The main tactics of Save Canada and Billboard Chris are to provoke conflict and get physically aggressive with counter-protesters\, then portray themselves as the victims in an effort to either raise their profile and create content or attempt to get counter-protesters arrested. They also may attempt to doxx and harass those who oppose their hateful agenda. \nBy taking some precautions\, we can keep each other safe while facing down far right instigators. \n\nDo not give interviews to far right media outlets or “independent journalists”\nDon’t debate far-right trolls. Drown them out with chants and noise! Especially if they are filming or livestreaming and looking for content.\nDo not film supporters without their permission\, and do not livestream. Do film the far right\, fake journalists\, and the police in order to protect yourself and your friends.\nProtect your identity. Mask up\, and use signs\, flags\, umbrellas\, etc.\, to protect yourself from being photographed by far right activists or fake news outlets.\nDo not talk to the police\nMaintain situational awareness\, and watch each others’ backs\nTry to arrive and leave as a group\nCheck the weather\, drive safely and dress appropriately! DESCRIPTION:Major’s Hill Park at noon for a short rally then march. \n\nOur goal is to build community opposition to policies and priorities of governments that attack workers\, undercut public health and education\, and trap people in poverty without the wages and supports they need to buy food and meet basic needs\, all while aiding and abetting sky-rocketing rents and housing costs\, and failing to tax corporate profits.  \nIn Ottawa\, we’re planning a family-friendly event\, with music\, speakers\, tables sponsored by community groups and unions\, and a children’s play area. From Ukraine to Yemen\, from Palestine to Colombia\, from Somalia to Syria\, from Afghanistan and Haiti to Ethiopia and Libya\, no one profits more from war and bloodshed than the companies and individuals at CANSEC. \nIt’s time to show up in force to oppose CANSEC and the profiteering from war and violence it is designed to support. \nThe world is run (and ravaged) by people who wake up early. On May 31st we need to wake up earlier than them to beat them to their fair. SUMMARY:Reimagining Safety\, Advancing Visions for a Decarceral City: Dispatches from Community Organizers
DESCRIPTION:Amid global calls to defund the police following the murder of George Floyd by officers in Minneapolis\, continued efforts to work towards diversion and decarceration from prisons\, and on-going concerns stemming from the expansion of state and corporate surveillance\, there continues to be a push to expand these and other forms of carcerality in the city of Ottawa located on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory. This is most evident in the year-over-year budget increases for the Ottawa Police Service (OPS)\, gentrification and the increased presence of police under the guise of “neighbourhood resource teams” in communities where poverty\, homelessness and precarious housing are a common experience\, the carceralization of public space through increases in surveillance and so-called security personnel from transit stations to sidewalks abutting sites of mass capitalist accumulation like the Rideau Centre\, and the provincial government’s push to build more prison spaces in the region that will forcibly displace people pushed to the margins from the city to a proposed site of human caging in Kemtpville\, as well as planned expansions to existing facilities in Brockville and Napanee. However\, carcerality in the form of surveillance\, coercion\, control\, displacement and even containment is not always fixed to particular spaces\, but is also mobile\, appearing in contexts often associated with care such schools\, shelters\, hospitals\, harm reduction sites\, treatment centres\, and the like where being perceived to be out of place or engaging in behaviour deemed problematic can also lead to exclusion in the Carceral City in ways that diminish our collective well-being and safety.\n\nThis event\, in the form of dispatches from community organizers\, aims to make visible how carcerality is at work\, as well as how safety is being reimagined and practiced outside of carceral frameworks in Ottawa. This intervention stems from a research project called “Resistance and Advocacy in the Carceral City” funded by an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada involving members of the University of Ottawa’s Carceral Studies Research Collective and community members involved in police\, prison\, penal and/or carceral abolitionist organizing in the city.

DESCRIPTION:The Workers’ History Museum and the Social Innovation Atelier invite you to the screening of the documentary Cal Best: His Life (Cal Best: Sa vie)\, about the journey of James Calbert Best\, a prominent figure in Black history in the 20th century. \nFollowing the film there will be a panel discussion with Blaise Ndala (writer in residence at Saint Paul University)\, Diana Mbonga (President of the Saint Paul Students Association)\, Claude Andrea Bonny (Journalist) and Arthur Carkner (Producer). Professors Leslie Toure Kapo and Christopher Gunter will moderate the discussion. \nAbout the Film: \nCal Best\, from New Glasgow\, NS\, co-founded PSAC and was a union leader who fought for the right to have better collective bargaining in the federal government. He went on to become a senior government official and Canada’s first Black High Commissions. Join your local ACORN office on March 29th in taking action against local developers: \nOttawa – 12PM meeting at Minto Park (Elgin/Gilmour St) before marching to the Taggart office. Taggart has donated $30\,000+ to the PC Party and was responsible for the demovictions at 142 Nepean St. \nBrampton – 2PM meeting outside City Hall at 2 Wellington St W\, and then marching to the Pulis Office.
