This talk highlights historical\, cultural\, and speculative themes readers can explore when engaging with this book and others by Indigenous authors. \nWaubgeshig Rice is an author and journalist from Wasauksing First Nation on Georgian Bay. His breakthrough novel Moon of the Crusted Snow was published in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim. Its sequel\, Moon of the Turning Leaves\, was published in 2023 and became an instant bestseller. His short stories and essays have been published in numerous anthologies.

From there\, participants will proceed north along Elgin Street toward Parliament Hill.\n\nAt Parliament Hill\, the route will turn left and continue west along Wellington Street to Bank Street. The march will then head south on Bank Street before turning left onto Somerset Street.\n\nParticipants will follow Somerset Street eastbound\, returning to Elgin Street and concluding back at the starting point.\n\nThis is a 3 km accessible route expected to take approximately 60–90 minutes. Alex will be joined in conversation by Kelly Bronson from the University of Ottawa. \nSocial Innovation Atelier\, 95 Clegg St.\nDoors open at 6:30pm\, program begins at 7pm. \nIs artificial intelligence going to take over the world? Have big tech scientists created an artificial lifeform that can think on its own? Is it going to put authors\, artists\, and others out of business? Are we about to enter an age where computers are better than humans at everything? \nThe answer to these questions\, linguist Emily M. Bender and sociologist Alex Hanna make clear\, is “no\,” “they wish\,” “LOL\,” and “definitely not.” This kind of thinking is a symptom of a phenomenon known as “AI hype.” Hype looks and smells fishy: It twists words and helps the rich get richer by justifying data theft\, motivating surveillance capitalism\, and devaluing human creativity in order to replace meaningful work with jobs that treat people like machines. \nIn The AI Con\, Bender and Hanna offer a sharp\, witty\, and wide-ranging take-down of AI hype across its many forms. They show you how to spot AI hype\, how to deconstruct it\, and how to expose the power grabs it aims to hide. Armed with these tools\, you will be prepared to push back against AI hype at work\, as a consumer in the marketplace\, as a skeptical newsreader\, and as a citizen holding policymakers to account. SUMMARY:Ottawa Anarchist Bookfair 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa Anarchist Bookfair is run by a group of local anarchists and anarchic-organizers who are interested in cultivating a culture of autonomous and decentralized organizing in so-called ottawa. Our fair will have a mixture of literature (books\, zines\, etc.) relevant to anarchism/anti-oppression/organizing\, community-run workshops & skillshares\, and tabling from autonomous community groups and organizers. \nWe acknowledge that as settlers on these stolen\, unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe lands we represent part of the problem and are committed to operating in solidarity with Indigenous resistance and organizing however we can. Additionally\, we acknowledge the ways that power structures such as colonialism\, racism\, classism\, misogyny\, ableism\, and queerphobia replicate themselves both inside and outside of activist spaces. As a collective\, we aim to make this event as accessible as possible to those left behind by the state and mainstream society. More details about our specific commitments and agreements for the space will be released soon on our website.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Basima Takrouri presents Imam: Tale of the Haunted Roads
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of Imam: Tale of the Haunted Roads\, a new novel by Palestinian-Canadian author Basima Takrouri. Basima will be joined in conversation by fellow author Ian Thomas Shaw. \n📍 Octopus Books\n🕒 Doors open at 6:30pm\, program begins at 7pm. \nThe novel follows the long human story of Palestine—from pre-1948 Jerusalem through war\, exile\, and return. It focuses less on the big headlines and more on what happens after: how people carry loss\, memory\, and survival across generations. At the center is Ali Al-Nabulsi\, a character shaped by everything around him—colonial pressure\, internal tensions\, and the quiet\, personal struggles that come with all of that. The story focuses on how history lives inside people\, not just around them. \nBasima Takrouri is a novelist\, poet\, screenwriter\, and cultural producer based in Toronto. She is the author of several acclaimed works\, including The Absentee’s Chair (مقعد الغائبة)\, published when she was only nineteen and recognized as the work of one of the youngest Palestinian female novelists of her generation; A Complicated Passage / Thorny Crossing (عبور شائك)\, recipient of the Next Page Foundation publishing award; Diaries Under Occupation (يوميات تحت الاحتلال); and the historical novel The Imam: Tale of the Haunted Roads (الإمام: قصة شبح سكن الطريق). Her writings have been translated into English\, French\, Swedish\, and Korean\, and published internationally in journals and anthologies\, including Qissat: Short Stories by Palestinian Women. She also co-wrote the Emmy Award–winning web drama Chankabout. Takrouri is the founder of Nuwa Arts and Cultural Production\, a member of PEN Canada and Writers in Exile\, and a PhD candidate in Humanities at York University\, where her research explores multilingual artistic production\, migration\, and cultural memory. \nCurrently residing in Aylmer\, Ian Thomas Shaw has worked as a diplomat and an international development worker\, living in Africa\, the Middle East and Europe. He is the founder of Deux Voiliers Publishing\, the Prose in the Park Literary Festival and the Ottawa Review of Books. DESCRIPTION:Come work on zines with us as we work on the next issue of The Dragon Flyer\, the Ottawa Trans Library’s community zine. Write\, draw\, scan\, cut\, and paste with us on our community zine or your own project\, or just come hang out with us. We are collecting stories\, jokes\, poems\, art\, and more from the trans and non-binary community in Ottawa and our friends and families. \nThe zine workshop is a collaborative event to discuss\, share\, and work on zines together. \nCome tell your story.We will provide paper\, templates\, and whatever art supplies we have. No experience necessary. All ages welcome\, children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. \nMasking the day of the event is encouraged. Accessibility note: There are two stairs at the door entrance. We have a ramp we can bring out for the door on request. There’s a washroom but it’s not large enough for many mobility devices.

DESCRIPTION:Queer Death Salon is a virtual community space for all 2SLGBTQIA+ people to come together to discuss death\, dying and grief. It is a facilitated drop-in discussion space\, with the purpose of building connection\, skill\, and resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ people navigating end of life in our personal lives and in our communities. \nJoin Badly Licked Bear for a deep conversation about the ways that sex and death are woven together in fetish\, kink and BDSM\, seen through and with a critical eye towards the realities and illusions of the “kink escalator\,” which like the “relationship escalator\,” both suggests and expects illusions of “progress” as a goal\, while also looking at the advantages of living and playing and loving in both the deep and the shallow ends of the pool. \nBadly Licked Bear is an educator\, storyteller\, artist\, and mutual aid worker. A former curator and college professor\, she teaches\, speaks\, and writes at the intersections of film\, culture\, politics and sexuality. She also works as a voice and activist for transgender civil rights and practical\, transformative sexuality in the BDSM\, kink\, and leather communities.
