SUMMARY:Free Talk! Imagining Sex\, Imagining Us: Pornography\, Transnational Print Culture\, and the Invention of “Gay Europe” by João Florêncio
DESCRIPTION:The circulation of gay erotica and pornography in post-war Europe was central to the development of a shared sense of identity and belonging among European gay men\, one which often disrupted the Cold War geopolitical imaginaries of “East” and “West\,” and thus their respective boundaries. In this talk\, I will sketch those dynamics and the role of transnational print\, consumer\, and sex cultures in shaping “Gay Europe\,” from the immediate postwar decades to the years following the fall of the Iron Curtain. In so doing\, I will ask questions about the role played by sexuality and sex media in both reproducing and troubling ideas of European identity\, belonging and citizenship that were being advanced at institutional levels as part of the postwar project of European integration. Ideas that remain\, to this day\, central to the ways in which we understand who counts as “European” and where does “Europe” instead end.

SUMMARY:Love as resistance: Political discussion and letter writing
DESCRIPTION:Carleton University\, Paterson Hall 201\n \nThis year\, we’re celebrating love in all its revolutionary forms: community\, resistance\, and understanding. Join us for letter writing and a political discussion on Friday February 13 ahead of Valentines Day! \nUS imperialism is in crisis: we’re seeing the rise of fascist attacks on migrants in the US\, impending threats to migrants in Canada\, and the US backed Philippines government making political prisoners out of youth\, workers\, and activists. The same militarization and anti-people tactics are being used to oppress people struggling for a better life\, from Canada to the US to the Philippines. \nNow more than ever it is important for us to come together. See you there!

SUMMARY:Module 4 - What is Science? P2
DESCRIPTION:Science for the People ‘Canada’ invites you to join our upcoming online reading group exploring The Social Production of Science curriculum. This is Module 4 of a reading group series. Follow Register link for more details! \nThis reading group continues SftP’s tradition of running a reading group alongside our local organising\, and the goal of this series is to better link our collective education with collective action\, bringing together members to deepen our shared understanding of science\, power\, and liberation. \nDeveloped and maintained by the Science for the People – New Haven Chapter\, this curriculum investigates how Marxism\, science\, and capitalism intersect — and how these forces shape both knowledge and the material conditions of our world. Through discussion and reflection\, we’ll consider what it means to reclaim science as a tool for social transformation. \nScience for the People ‘Canada’ has grown\, both in number of chapters and membership\, and now is a crucial moment to clarify our strategic goals and direction. This series is one way we can do that together.\nAll members\, new and old\, are warmly invited. Each module will include two readings; participants are encouraged to complete both\, and facilitators will provide summaries to guide discussion. Note: \nTo help foster an atmosphere of comradely curiosity:\nPlease come prepared with:\n– One open-ended question about the readings to share with the group\n– One response or connection to organizing you have done or would like to do locally\nModule meetings will occur monthly on Monday evenings at 8pm EST.

SUMMARY:“Dabke Is Better Than a Thousand Lectures Against Islamophobia”
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to dance a relationship to one stolen land\, Palestine\, from another stolen land\, Haudenosaunee territory on Turtle Island? This article examines methodological considerations for researching what it means to belong to settler states as exiled and racialized people\, while committed to Arab youth thriving and ethical lateral racial relations. Drawing from her positionality as an Arab mother\, the author engages four methodological imperatives. First\, she centers joy and the richness of Arab cultural production\, refusing dominant narratives\, to produce knowledge of use to her communities. Second\, she engages with participants as she would want researchers to engage with her child. Third\, the author is wary of surveillance climates Arabs face in settler states. Finally\, she honors the participants’ expressions of faith as key to their praxis. Throughout\, the author is reflexive of her positionality as a non-Palestinian Arab woman coupled with her belief in the liberation of Palestine as el-qadiyya el-om (the mother of all struggles). She concludes with an addendum\, written during month ten of the genocide\, theorizing how it radically heightens methodological considerations with and for Palestinian and Arab communities on Turtle Island\, and is where she contemporizes her blistering definition of an Arab mothering research imagination. \n\n\n\n\nLucy El-Sherif; “Dabke Is Better Than a Thousand Lectures Against Islamophobia”: Palestine\, Arab Mothering\, and the Research Imagination. Meridians 1 October 2025; 24 (2): 555–581. doi: https://doi.org/10.1215/15366936-11862647 \nDr. Lucy El-Sherif is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto (OISE). Her research examines Palestinian and Arab youth transnational subject formation on Turtle Island\, with a focus on embodiment\, performance\, and pedagogies of belonging. Working at the intersection of Arab studies\, critical race studies\, performance studies\, and Indigenous studies\, she asks: what does it mean to dance a relationship to one stolen land\, Palestine\, from another stolen land\, Haudenosaunee territory on Turtle Island? Her scholarship approaches culture as political infrastructure\, understood as a set of lived\, relational practices through which political consciousness is shaped. \nA central throughline in her work is how Palestine operates as a structuring axis of Arab racialization in North America. The occupation of Palestine is an ongoing condition that shapes racialization\, political viability\, and political possibility across transnational space. Her research traces how political subject formation takes shape in everyday spaces long before it is formalized through law\, citizenship\, or institutions. \nHer current book project\, Dabke on Turtle Island\, develops an analytic account of dabke across transnational sites\, theorizing dance as a practice of survivance\, ontological refusal and repair\, and relational world-making under conditions of racialization and exile. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork with youth\, community organizers\, and cultural producers\, the project challenges binaries between the political and the cultural. \nDr. El-Sherif’s work has appeared in venues such as Lateral: Journal of the Cultural Studies Association and Meridians: Feminism\, Race\, Transnationalism. Across research and teaching\, she is committed to emic\, grounded methodologies and to theorizing Arab life on Turtle Island on its own analytic terms \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarrefour des apprentissages (CRX)\n\nCRX 230. 100 Louis-Pasteur Private \nOttawa\, ON K1N 9N3

SUMMARY:CHUO 89.1 FM referendum at University of Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:The uOttawa student elections this year March 2-6 are a last chance to save campus/community radio station CHUO 89.1 FM. \nYou can help in the campaign to convince students to “Restore CHUO”. \nThis past December\, the CHUO board of directors made the decision to close the station due to lack of funds. Pre-recorded broadcasting is set to continue until the end of March\, then the station is planned to go silent. \nThis referendum can reverse that situation. The stations funding problems arose largely due to a 2023-2024 student vote revoking the long-standing student fee (‘levy’) that was a major part of CHUO’s funding. Less than 10% of students voted either way in that previous referendum. \nThis current referendum is on a proposal to establish a smaller levy than existed previously. \nA small group of volunteers\, many of them show hosts at CHUO\, are attempting to reach out to UO undergrad students and let them know about the situation\, to convince them to vote to support CHUO. \nWays to support this campaign: \n* Personally reach out to uOttawa undergrads you have connection with\, or to people you know who have connections to undergrads. \n* Join with campaign members to distribute flyers to students on campus this coming week (February 23-28) prior to the vote. \nFull information – including contact email address and sign up form – is at the linktr.ee/891chuo \n“CHUO 89.1 FM had the most diverse and representative programming out of all the campus/community stations in Canada\,” according to a member of the CFRU (GuelphU) news department after hearing word of the closure in December.

SUMMARY:OPIRG-GRIPO referendum at University of Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:Re-establishing student funding for OPIRG-GRIPO is on the ballot during this year’s UOSU undergraduate student elections March 2-6. \nOPIRG-GRIPO\, the Ontario Public Interest Research Group at uOttawa\, lost student funding in a 2023-2024 referendum\, and is in a very precarious financial situation without the student support. \nHelp us ensure students know the importance and history of what OPIRG is about\, both on-campus and off\, and our relevance to their lives today. \nHelp us ensure OPIRG-GRIPO’s survival as part of the struggle for social change. \nPlease reach out to any University of Ottawa undergraduate students you can to get out the vote. \nAnd if you would like to directly help OPIRG-GRIPO with the referendum campaign\, please get in touch by email (admin@opirg-gripo.ca) or the link-in-bio on Instagram.

SUMMARY:Shut Down the War Machine
DESCRIPTION:This Wednesday\, hundreds of lead Canadian ministers\, military generals\, and US NATO representatives will descend on Ottawa for a war conference. They need to hear loud and clear that we reject their plans to ramp up militarism\, war profiteering\, and arming war crimes and genocide. \n\nShow up to protest Wednesday at noon at Chateau Fairmont Laurier to crash their lunch break!\n\nIt’s time to say hell no to NATO’s 5% target and to Carney’s promises to more than double Canada’s military budget. It’s time to slash military spending and invest in our communities. No more money for war and weapons. We stand in solidarity with everyone harmed by Canadian militarism and its growing partnership with the US war machine\, from Palestine to Venezuela\, from Cuba to the Congo\, from Iran to Sudan.
