DESCRIPTION:Queer Death Salon is a community space for all 2SLGBTQIA+ people to come together to discuss death\, dying and grief. It is a facilitated drop-in discussion space\, with the purpose of building connection\, skill\, and resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ people navigating end of life in our personal lives and in our communities. \nOur bodies\, lives\, and very beings are increasingly politicized.\nOur stories and histories are flattened\, made palatable for the sake of survival.\nOur unique grief becomes increasingly buried and unheard\, unshared.\nWhat makes it unique?\nWhat do we grieve?\nHow does that grief affect us?\nWhat prevents us from engaging with that grief?\nHow does our grief connect us and bring us together?\nFacilitator Imogen Reid is the last of the feral trans women\, a proud dirtbag\, degenerate\, and fuck up. She is a harm reduction advocate and educator\, a former founding member of Communities Organizing for Harm Reduction\, one of the first organized groups in Ottawa doing harm reduction before there were any safe sites. SUMMARY:“Dabke Is Better Than a Thousand Lectures Against Islamophobia”
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to dance a relationship to one stolen land\, Palestine\, from another stolen land\, Haudenosaunee territory on Turtle Island? This article examines methodological considerations for researching what it means to belong to settler states as exiled and racialized people\, while committed to Arab youth thriving and ethical lateral racial relations. Drawing from her positionality as an Arab mother\, the author engages four methodological imperatives. First\, she centers joy and the richness of Arab cultural production\, refusing dominant narratives\, to produce knowledge of use to her communities. Second\, she engages with participants as she would want researchers to engage with her child. Third\, the author is wary of surveillance climates Arabs face in settler states. Finally\, she honors the participants’ expressions of faith as key to their praxis. Throughout\, the author is reflexive of her positionality as a non-Palestinian Arab woman coupled with her belief in the liberation of Palestine as el-qadiyya el-om (the mother of all struggles). She concludes with an addendum\, written during month ten of the genocide\, theorizing how it radically heightens methodological considerations with and for Palestinian and Arab communities on Turtle Island\, and is where she contemporizes her blistering definition of an Arab mothering research imagination. \n\n\n\n\nLucy El-Sherif; “Dabke Is Better Than a Thousand Lectures Against Islamophobia”: Palestine\, Arab Mothering\, and the Research Imagination. Meridians 1 October 2025; 24 (2): 555–581. doi: https://doi.org/10.1215/15366936-11862647 \nDr. Lucy El-Sherif is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto (OISE). Her research examines Palestinian and Arab youth transnational subject formation on Turtle Island\, with a focus on embodiment\, performance\, and pedagogies of belonging. Working at the intersection of Arab studies\, critical race studies\, performance studies\, and Indigenous studies\, she asks: what does it mean to dance a relationship to one stolen land\, Palestine\, from another stolen land\, Haudenosaunee territory on Turtle Island? Her scholarship approaches culture as political infrastructure\, understood as a set of lived\, relational practices through which political consciousness is shaped. \nA central throughline in her work is how Palestine operates as a structuring axis of Arab racialization in North America. The occupation of Palestine is an ongoing condition that shapes racialization\, political viability\, and political possibility across transnational space. Her research traces how political subject formation takes shape in everyday spaces long before it is formalized through law\, citizenship\, or institutions. \nHer current book project\, Dabke on Turtle Island\, develops an analytic account of dabke across transnational sites\, theorizing dance as a practice of survivance\, ontological refusal and repair\, and relational world-making under conditions of racialization and exile. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork with youth\, community organizers\, and cultural producers\, the project challenges binaries between the political and the cultural. \nDr. El-Sherif’s work has appeared in venues such as Lateral: Journal of the Cultural Studies Association and Meridians: Feminism\, Race\, Transnationalism. SUMMARY:CHUO 89.1 FM referendum at University of Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:The uOttawa student elections this year March 2-6 are a last chance to save campus/community radio station CHUO 89.1 FM. \nYou can help in the campaign to convince students to “Restore CHUO”. \nThis past December\, the CHUO board of directors made the decision to close the station due to lack of funds. Pre-recorded broadcasting is set to continue until the end of March\, then the station is planned to go silent. \nThis referendum can reverse that situation. The stations funding problems arose largely due to a 2023-2024 student vote revoking the long-standing student fee (‘levy’) that was a major part of CHUO’s funding. Less than 10% of students voted either way in that previous referendum. \nThis current referendum is on a proposal to establish a smaller levy than existed previously. \nA small group of volunteers\, many of them show hosts at CHUO\, are attempting to reach out to UO undergrad students and let them know about the situation\, to convince them to vote to support CHUO. \nWays to support this campaign: \n* Personally reach out to uOttawa undergrads you have connection with\, or to people you know who have connections to undergrads. \n* Join with campaign members to distribute flyers to students on campus this coming week (February 23-28) prior to the vote. \nFull information – including contact email address and sign up form – is at the linktr.ee/891chuo \n“CHUO 89.1 FM had the most diverse and representative programming out of all the campus/community stations in Canada\,” according to a member of the CFRU (GuelphU) news department after hearing word of the closure in December.

DESCRIPTION:Hassan Husseini is a member of the National Steering Committee of Labour for Palestine – Canada. He is a national negotiator for the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) where he represents PSAC members during contract negotiations under federal\, provincial and territorial jurisdictions. Husseini has occupied several elected and staff positions within a number of unions including CUPE Local 4600\, Canadian Labour Congress\, Ottawa CUPE District Council and Unifor Local 2025. In 2014\, he ran for the presidency of the Canadian Labour Congress on a program of renewed labour militancy and activism. \nDuring his PhD studies\, Husseini was a contract instructor in Political Science at Carleton University and University of Ottawa\, where he taught courses on Middles East Politics and Government. SUMMARY:The Feminist Festival Against Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening celebration of International Women’s Day 2026\, jointly hosted by the Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women (OCTEVAW) and the Archives and Special Collections (ARCS) at the University of Ottawa. \nRegistration is required. \nInspired by the 1981 “Community Festival Against the Klan” organized by the Riverdale Action Committee Against Racism (RACAR)\, this collaborative event is an opportunity to commemorate the accomplishments of local organizers and to learn about histories of community resistance to violence against women\, fascism\, and white supremacy in Canada. In 1981\, the presence of a new Klu Klux Klan chapter in East Toronto galvanized neighbours to mobilize in solidarity against racial terror. RACAR’s “Festival Against the Klan” included political speeches\, performances\, educational workshops\, and a march against the KKK. \n“Feminist Festival Against Fascism” will include an opening ceremony\, a recognition ceremony honouring three key areas of feminist leadership in Ottawa (Advocate\, Rabble Rouser\, and Visionary)\, light entertainment\, and a lively game of Feminist Trivia (not to mention prizes and free snacks!) In the ARCS reading room\, attendees will have a chance to view this year’s public history exhibit\, The Feminist Economy: Women’s Perspectives on Trade and Labour. \nLike RACAR and other 1980s groups such as Gays and Lesbians Against the Right Everywhere (GLARE)\, Lesbians Against the Right\, and the International Women’s Day Committee\, we insist on celebrating our shared struggle while militantly opposing gender-based violence\, racial hatred\, attacks against the LGBTQ+ community\, and authoritarianism in all its forms. Whether you’re a protestor\, an activist\, a service provider\, worker\, scholar\, artist\, or community member wishing to unite against oppressive forces\, you too are a part of the collective history preserved and documented here at ARCS. \nWe can’t wait to see you there! \n**** Please note that this event will be held in English.
