SUMMARY:Beyond Occupation and Extraction: Palestinian and Venezuelan Voices in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Climate Commons on March 25 @4PM over zoom for “Beyond Occupation and Extraction: Palestinian and Venezuelan Voices in Conversation” \n\nRegister Here \n\nIn a moment when Donald Trump’s extractivist war machine seems unconstrained by anything other than the price of oil\, and the international order\, long on the rocks\, is finally breaking up\, we must not forget to attend to the myriad forms of life\, resistance\, and even joy that work against and despite neoimperialism in specific places. What can the lived experience of unspeakable violence teach us not about militarism and extractivism but about what can\, should\, and must endure beyond them? In this 90 minute live online dialogue\, scholars from Caracas\, Venezuela and the Gaza Strip share their experiences\, ideas\, fears\, and hopes across the long-discredited but still pernicious orientalist dichotomy of East and West.

SUMMARY:Myron Rusk 2026 Lecture in Civil Liberties: “Trans Freedom and the Utopian Horizon”
DESCRIPTION:M. E. O’Brien will lecture on the relationship between gender freedom and capitalism. She will begin by identifying the current fascist assault on trans rights across multiple national contexts. After briefly tracing varying current strategies of trans survival\, organizing and flourishing\, she will turn to the role of trans futures and utopian longings in movement work. Drawing on her work in science fiction\, family abolitionism\, and her conceptual framework of “insurgent utopianism”\, O’Brien will identify the kernel of revolutionary desire evoked in trans life. Trans freedom\, she argues\, necessarily includes a push against and beyond the private family\, state regulation of gender and sexuality\, and the generalized market dependency of capitalism. \nBio: M. E. O’Brien is a psychoanalyst and writer in New York City. She has two books\, Family Abolition: Capitalism and the Communizing of Care (Pluto\, 2023) and the co-authored speculative fiction novel Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune\, 2052-2072\, with Eman Abdelhadi (Common Notions\, 2022). She previously completed a PhD in Sociology\, writing on capitalism and NYC queer and trans social movements. She is involved in a number of editing projects\, including Pinko\, a magazine of gay communism.

SUMMARY:Iran and Palestine: Rethinking Liberation Beyond the Binaries of Imperialism and Theocracy
DESCRIPTION:The recent illegal war on Iran by the US and Israel has pushed the political support for Iran and Palestine into a problematically oppositional binary. This binary\, which is aggressively promoted by Zionists and greatly benefits their project of domination and destruction in the region\, has presented imperialist and Zionist forces as the only hope of the people of Iran for liberation from a brutal dictatorship. Meanwhile\, those who support the liberation of Palestinians are pressured to enact their anti-imperialist and anti-Zionism stance by siding with the Iranian regime against its people. In this session\, we will work against this binary\, make a case for Iranian-Palestinian solidarity\, and envision forms of liberation that does not require the oppression of one group for another. \n\n\nWednesday\, March 25\, 6-7:30pm \n\n\nDunton Tower 2017\, Carleton University

SUMMARY:NO TYRANTS OTTAWA
DESCRIPTION:Be part of a worldwide protest against Tru*p and the current US administration. \nWe have the power and are claiming it together. No Tyrants. No Thrones. No Crowns. No Kings in the US. \nWhat began in 2025 as a single day of defiance has become a sustained international resistance to tyranny\, spreading from small towns to city centres and across every community determined to defend democracy. Our peaceful movement is bigger than ever. \nSilence is not an option. We will defend ourselves\, our communities\, Canada and other sovereign nations against the current US administration’s unjust and cruel acts of violence. \nOn March 28th\, rise up\, take to the streets\, and say it loud: no tyrants\, thrones\, no crowns\, and no kings in the US. We’re not watching history happen—we’re making it. Join us with your posters\, costumes and creativity. Meet at the York Steps or along Major’s Hill Park. We will be marching around the US Embassy (on level ground.) \nA core principle behind all No Tyrants and No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind\, including those legally permitted\, should not be brought to events.

SUMMARY:Enemies of the State: How spying on Indigenous activists became a priority at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice (ICCJ) kindly invites you to attend the ICCJ Winter 2026 colloquium\, “Enemies of the State: How spying on Indigenous activists became a priority at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service”. This event is a joint presentation and conversation between Brett Forester and renowned Indigenous activist\, author\, and filmmaker Ellen Gabriel. \nEvent date and time: Monday\, April 13\, 2026 from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm\nEvent location: RC 4400\, SJC Resource Centre\, Richcraft Hall \nEvent Description: \nHow much time and effort has Canada spent spying on Indigenous activists?  In 2022\, Brett Forester of CBC Indigenous in Ottawa set out to answer that question. It proved easy enough to ask but nearly impossible to answer. It took three years\, four formal access to information requests\, one informal request\, three complaints to the federal information commissioner and one court challenge\, but after all this wrangling we can begin to confirm the long-suspected truth: Snooping on Indigenous peoples has been a priority for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service almost since its inception. \nAfter reviewing more than 1\,000 pages of declassified documents\, Forester found surveillance that began in Labrador in 1988 with Cold War paranoia about Soviet meddling had by 1998 evolved into a national counterterrorism project monitoring Indigenous dissent as a form of domestic extremism. In this talk\, Forester will explain why and how this came to be\, as he offers a behind-the-scenes look at his investigation into more than a decade of CSIS’s self-styled “Native extremism” operations. This event is a joint presentation and conversation between Brett Forester and renowned Indigenous activist\, author\, and filmmaker Ellen Gabriel. \nThis event is co-sponsored with Law and Legal Students\, NPSIA\, Journalism and Communications\, and Indigenous Studies. \nSpace will be limited for this event. Please register using the form on the event page\, linked below. \nEnemies of the State: How spying on Indigenous activists became a priority at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service – Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice \n

SUMMARY:Bubble By-law Public Delegation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On April 17\, the “bubble” bylaw will be voted on by the Joint Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services and Public Works and Infrastructure Committee\, and we need to make sure councillors fully understand all of the consequences before making their decisions. \nAny form of a bubble bylaw will have a chilling effect on dissent\, and there is nowhere near enough evidence of protests causing real harm to justify cracking down on freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. \nOttawa’s proposal was only made public recently\, but we’ll bring you our analysis at the training session on Monday evening. SUMMARY:LNG Not in our National Interest
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of global turmoil and yet another war for oil\, here at home our PM Mark Carney is pushing hard to fast track new fossil fuel megaprojects. Billions of public dollars are slated to derisk LNG projects like Ksi Lisims and LNG Canada Phase 2\, projects that worsen climate chaos and violate Indigenous rights. \nPeople across the country are coming together on the week of action on LNG: Not in our National Interest. We must send a clear message to Carney and his ministers that Canadians reject public investments in these projects\, and want to see investments in communities and clean energy. \nJoin Decolonial Solidarity\, Amnesty International and allies in Ottawa at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday\, April 14\, outside Export Development Canada office (150 Slater St.) to deliver our message: LNG is not in the national interest. EDC is one of the biggest government agencies investing in LNG projects. This action is the beginning of a broader organizing effort in Ottawa-Gatineau to stop public investments in LNG.

SUMMARY:POSTER EXHIBITION: Art is a Weapon: Revolutionary and Antifascist Posters from Spain 1936-39
DESCRIPTION:Poster exhibition runs April 15 to June 20\, 2026.\nGongfu Bao Restaurant\, 365 Bank Street\nFree entry\nOrganized by the Education for Liberation Collective \nIn 1930s Spain\, artists\, organizers\, unions\, and leftist political parties produced thousands of stunning posters promoting revolutionary social change and opposing fascism. In 1936\, the Spanish Civil War began when fascists organized a coup to overthrow Spain’s democratically-elected leftist Popular Front government\, composed of a coalition of socialists\, anarchists\, communists\, workers’ organizations and social movements. From 1936-38\, thousands of international volunteers\, including at least 1500 Canadians\, went to Spain to join the Popular Front in the fight against fascism. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy enthusiastically supported the coup\, and the fascists ultimately won\, installing a dictatorship that would last until the late 1970s. \nArt is a Weapon: Revolutionary and Antifascist Posters from Spain 1936-39 presents reproductions of more than 25 striking posters that teach us the history of revolutionary Spain and the Spanish Civil War. But these posters are more than just artefacts of the past. They illuminate a history that extends into the present moment and to struggles we continue to fight today\, from opposing fascism\, fighting for gender liberation\, defending children’s genuine health and well-being\, and defending the dignity and well-being of working people to fighting for environmental sustainability\, for public education and art\, and supporting international solidarity. \nThe exhibition also includes reproductions of artefacts from the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion\, the Canadian contingent of the International Brigades that fought against fascism in Spain.\nCurated by Claire Nicolson-Hurtig (@encrenoire.illustration\, Posters for Palestine 2024 exhibition\, member of Education for Liberation Collective) \nPosters are reproduced from the collections of the Fundacion Pablo Iglesias (Madrid\, Spain)\, the Robert D. Farber University Archives and Special Collections of Brandeis University (USA)\, and the Centre de Recursos per Aprenentatge i la Investigació at the University of Barcelona (Spain).

SUMMARY:Palestinian Prisoners' Day
DESCRIPTION:Healthcare workers and community members will gather to mark Palestinian Prisoners’ Day and to demand the immediate release of thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. \nWHEN: Friday\, April 17\, 2026 at 5:00PM\nWHERE: Human Rights Monument\, Ottawa\, ON\nWHO: Health Workers Alliance for Palestine (HAP)\, alongside the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM)\, Ottawa Healthcare Professionals for Palestine (OHCP4P)\, Doctors Against Genocide (DAG)\, Jews Say No to Genocide (JSNTG)\, GLIA Equal Care\, and community supporters are organizing this vigil to demand immediate action. \nThe zionist settler colonial entity has long used incarceration\, forced disappearance and imprisonment as a way to break up Palestinian families and communities. Political prisoners\, who face colonial violence every day are at the forefront of resistance\, and are at the centre of the struggle for liberation. \nOver 9500 Palestinian political prisoners are currently detained\, including over 350 children. Palestinian children are the only children in the world who are prosecuted in military courts without due process or held in administrative detention with no charge at all. There are at least 91 health care workers\, many of whom were abducted directly from hospitals and ambulances\, seized while treating patients and refusing to abandon the wounded. While in prison\, Palestinian political prisoners are subject to torture\, and neglect at the hands of zionist captors including health care workers. Canada and its institutions including the health sector are complicit through diplomatic and material support to Israel. \nThe urgency is compounded by a bill advancing in the Israeli Knesset that seeks to legalize the execution of Palestinian prisoners. \nWe demand\n* Immediate release of all Palestinian political prisoners\, including healthcare workers\n* An end to administrative detention\, torture\, and medical abuse\n* An end to Canada’s complicity in Israeli occupation and genocide\nWe also demand immediate access to legal representation\, family visits\, health care\, and access to water\, food and hygiene.
