SUMMARY:Nothing to Celebrate: Canada’s role as a settler colonial state from Turtle Island to Palestine
DESCRIPTION:To mark Indigenous Peoples Month\, join CAPE for Palestine for a webinar on connections between settler colonialism on Turtle Island and the occupation of Palestine. Every July 1st\, Canadians are told we should celebrate living in so-called Canada. But what is there to celebrate when we see Canadian officials continue to support a genocide? There is no cause for celebration. Nor has there been for years\, as Indigenous leaders have highlighted Canada’s active and ongoing role in genocide against Indigenous peoples.CAPE 4 Palestine recognizes that as public servants\, we have a distinct responsibility to hold our employer\, the Government of Canada\, to account and to understand how settler colonialism operates across borders. We must stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in so-called Canada and Palestinians fighting for liberation and freedom.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Israelism
DESCRIPTION:Join First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa for a screening of the 2023 documentary Israelism. The film follows the changing perspectives of Simone Zimmerman\, co-founder of If Not Now and Eitan\, a former IDF soldier\, exemplifying sweeping grassroots changes among young Jews in response to Israel’s brutal treatment of Palestinian people. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion led by Professor Mira Sucharov. \nTuesday\, June 25 – 6:30pm\nFellowship Hall\, First Unitarian\n30 Cleary Ave\, Ottawa \n“Two young American Jews – Simone and Eitan – are raised to defend the state of Israel at all costs. Eitan joins the Israeli military. Simone supports Israel on ‘the other battlefield:’ America’s college campuses. When they witness Israel’s mistreatment of the Palestinian people with their own eyes\, they are horrified and heartbroken. They join the movement of young American Jews battling the old guard over Israel’s centrality in American Judaism\, and demanding freedom for the Palestinian people. Their stories reveal a generational divide in the North American Jewish community as more young Jews question the narratives they were raised on.”

Tag us on social media too\, we’d love to see the hard work of our local young artists!\nAbout Kidical Mass\nKidical Mass is an international movement inspired by ‘critical mass’ events held to emphasize the number of people who want to ride bikes and to call for infrastructure improvements. Kidical Mass expands on that idea with a focus on children and families. These events celebrate the joy of biking asking cities to make streets safe for kids and therefore safe for everyone. We believe children should be able to safely and independently travel to school\, parks\, sports\, and other destinations. With climate change already impacting the lives of children\, safe streets for kids also means seriously addressing the climate emergency. There are measures – both big and small – that cities like Ottawa can pursue to make this possible.\nWhat makes streets safer for kids?– A true Vision Zero strategy that focuses on proactive design action to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries. A key tenet of Vision Zero is that street design can ensure that when mistakes happen they don’t cause life-changing impacts.– Separated and wide bike lanes that provide access to children’s destinations like schools\, libraries\, parks\, and community centres– Traffic calming features and reduced speed limits on arterials and residential streets– Car-free streets including parkways and school streets– Elimination of right-turns on red lights-Streets that address climate change by reducing private vehicle use– Vehicle size regulations and safety testing that includes the safety of people outside of the vehicle\nAbout the Event Hosts\nBike Ottawa is a not-for-profit volunteer-based advocacy group. We believe riding a bike in Ottawa should be a fun\, safe\, and easy choice for all ages and abilities. We are committed to advocating for a vibrant and equitable Ottawa where active transportation plays an important role in year-round mobility.\nFor Our Kids Ottawa Gatineau is a community of parents\, grandparents and families who are concerned about climate change. We organize family-friendly activism and information activities and provide a space to connect and take action together. We strive to be a welcoming place for all parents\, guardians\, grandparents\, caregivers\, and community members to connect and act together.\nSchool Streets Ottawa is a coalition of local volunteers along with supporting organizations who advocate for kids to have healthy and safe ways to get to school. Our mission is to have more students using travel modes that are active\, safe\, and sustainable.\nAlta Vista Community Association provides a forum where Alta Vista residents can dialog with each other and with the levels of government on matters affecting the quality of life in Alta Vista; and facilitates the work of committees and grass roots project groups endeavouring to improve the quality of life in Alta Vista.\nQuestions about the event can be sent to kidicalmassottawa@gmail.com

SUMMARY:No Pride in Genocide On-line Teach-in
DESCRIPTION:This teach-in will make connections between the current genocidal attacks on the Palestinian people\, on Indigenous people on Turtle Island\, on people in Sudan\, and on attacks on queer and trans people in Canada and beyond. Mainstream white homonationalist LGBT and Pride organizations in Canada have refused to support the call for an end to the Israeli genocide of Palestinians and instead support the genocidal Canadian state as well as corporations and banks that are supporting the ongoing destruction of Palestine. This teach-in is the lead in to our anti-genocidal\, anti-racist and anti-fascist Abolitionist Pride of resistance and love while opposing those who believe Pride can be based on genocide.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: A Communist for the RCMP by Dennis Gruending
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of A Communist for the RCMP\, Dennis Gruending’s exposé of Canada’s nefarious and disruptive surveillance practices. Dennis will be joined in conversation by writer and a former Canadian diplomat Geoff White. \nMonday\, June 17 starting at 7:00pm\nOttawa Mennonite Church\, 1830 Kilborn Ave.\, Ottawa\nRefreshments will be served \nIn 1941\, the RCMP recruited Frank Hadesbeck\, a Spanish Civil War veteran\, as a paid informant to infiltrate the Communist Party. For decades\, he informed not only upon communists\, but also upon hundreds of other people who held progressive views. Hadesbeck’s “Watch Out” lists on behalf of the Security Service included labour activists\, medical doctors\, lawyers\, university professors and students\, journalists\, Indigenous and progressive farm leaders\, members of the clergy\, and anyone involved in the peace and human rights movements. \n“The Canadian government has made exceptional efforts to erase or seclude documents related to decades of RCMP dirty tricks\, but A Communist for the RCMP provides stunning insights into the nuts and bolts of the force’s infiltration campaigns. Dennis Gruending provides a rich and masterful narration of previously unseen informant files\, creating an unrelenting account into the everyday work of RCMP infiltration… it is a must-read for anyone looking to understand the politics of RCMP spying.” – Jeffrey Monaghan\, co-author of Policing Indigenous Movements: Dissent and the Security State \nDennis Gruending has written and edited eight books. He has worked as a print and television journalist and as a CBC Radio host. Gruending served as a New Democratic Party MP in the 36th parliament and was his party’s critic for the environment and for international development.

SUMMARY:Antifascist Theory and Practice: A Double Book Launch for Three Way Fight and Genealogies of Antifascism
DESCRIPTION:An evening of discussion with Xtn Alexander\, D.Z. Shaw\, and Rob Luzecky. \nThree Way Fight: Revolutionary Politics and Antifascism\, edited by Xtn Alexander and Matthew N. Lyons\, brings together more than thirty essays\, position statements\, and interviews from the Three Way Fight website and elsewhere\, spanning from the antifascist struggles of the 1980s and 1990s to the political upheavals of the twenty-first century. \nThree way fight politics argue that the far right grows out of an oppressive capitalist order but is also in conflict with it in real ways\, and that radicals need to combat both. The three way fight approach says we need sharper analysis of far-right movements so we can fight them more effectively\, and we also need to track ongoing developments within the ruling class\, including liberal or centrist efforts to co-opt antifascism as a tool of state repression and system legitimation. \nAimed at a politically committed activist audience\, D.Z. Shaw’s Genealogies of Antifascism: Militancy\, Critique\, and the Three Way Fight provides a snapshot of this evolving philosophy of antifascism that grapples with the theoretical and practical challenges presented both by recent events and by the historical foundations of North America’s settler societies. \nLearning from the past to build a revolutionary antifascism for the present and future! \nMore about each of these books here: \nThree Way Fight: Revolutionary Politics and Antifascism \nGenealogies of Antifascism: Militancy\, Critique\, and the Three Way Fight

SUMMARY:Book Launch: North of Nowhere with Marie Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event at the National Gallery of Canada to celebrate the launch of North of Nowhere: Song of a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner\, featuring author Marie Wilson in conversation with Duncan McCue. \nMonday\, June 10\, 6pm-8pm\nNational Gallery auditorium\, 380 Sussex Dr\, Ottawa\nFree event. No registration needed.\nIn English with simultaneous French interpretation. \nThe incomparable first-hand account of the historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada told by one of the commissioners who led it. \nThe Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to record the previously hidden history of more than a century of forced residential schooling for Indigenous children. Marie Wilson helped lead that work as one of just three commissioners. With the skills of a journalist\, the heart of a mother and grandmother\, and the insights of a life as the spouse of a residential school survivor\, Commissioner Wilson guides readers through her years witnessing survivor testimony across the country\, providing her unique perspective on the personal toll and enduring public value of the commission. In this unparalleled account\, she honours the voices of survivors who have called Canada to attention\, determined to heal\, reclaim\, and thrive. \nPart vital public documentary\, part probing memoir\, North of Nowhere breathes fresh air into the possibilities of reconciliation amid the persistent legacy of residential schools. It is a call to everyone to view the important and continuing work of reconciliation not as an obligation but as a gift.

SUMMARY:We The Power Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Come watch the Patagonia Film We The Power and stay for a discussion hosted by the Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-operative (OREC) to learn ways we can work toward a community-owned energy grid.\nPlease register on eventbrite – limited seats available! \nWe The Power Film \nImagine upending the traditional energy system and giving the power of clean electricity production back to your neighbors. We the Power follows friends\, families and visionaries as they break down legislative barriers and take power back from big energy companies to put in the hands of locals. The film chronicles local cooperatives from deep in Germany’s Black Forest to the streets of ancient Girona in Spain and the urban rooftops of London\, England\, as they pave the way for a renewable-energy revolution and build healthier\, more financially stable communities. \nCommunity Social\nCome meet and chat with local community organizations to learn more and find ways to get involved. We will be joined by Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability (CAFES)\, Electrify613\, EnviroCentre\, Electric Vehicle Council of Ottawa (EVCO)\, and the Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-operative (OREC). \nCommunity Partners:\nCAFES (Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability) – Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability (CAFES) has been working since 2010 to help community associations in Ottawa share ideas and achieve common environmental goals by uniting our voices. With a strong inner urban base\, the CAFES network has been expanding our membership into Ottawa’s suburban and rural areas. CAFES acts as a network between community associations and citizens who are working to promote environmental sustainability in our city and our neighbourhoods\, sharing information on concerns\, community events\, best practices and research. CAFES monitors City Hall\, making regular and well-received public delegations on issues of concern to our members. We have a solid advocacy record\, scoring ‘wins’ such as strengthening the City’s Tree Protection Bylaw and getting the City to report annually on our greenhouse gas emissions. \nElectrify613 – an online community for neighbours and experts to connect with each other in making our homes more efficient and emissions-free. We’re on a mission to help fully electrify every neighbourhood in Ottawa. \nEnviroCentre – an environmental not-for-profit organization located in Ottawa. For more than 20 years\, we have been delivering programs and services designed to help individuals\, businesses\, and communities reduce their carbon emissions and lighten their impacts on the environment. EnviroCentre’s mission is to scope\, design\, deliver and scale practical solutions to dramatically reduce climate emissions in our communities. Our vision is that a sustainable\, net-zero future is achieved in Ottawa\, and we are taking action every day to support that goal. \nWe work in collaboration with partners and clients to implement meaningful projects and programs across Eastern Ontario. Some examples include home energy services such as Better Homes Ottawa\, Home Energy Audit Services\, Energy Affordability Programs\, Future Homes Retrofit Accelerator\, and community programs: Let’s Bike Ottawa\, Rain Ready Ottawa\, Ottawa School Active Transportation Program\, Mini-Forests and tree planting projects\, Demonstration Rain Gardens\, and other Green Infrastructure projects. \nWe have a staff of just over 50 keen\, committed\, and professional people who dedicate each day to making our world a little cleaner and greener for generations to come! \nEVCO (Electric Vehicle Council of Ottawa) – Founded in 1982\, EVCO is a non-profit\, volunteer-run group of EV owners dedicated to promoting and advocating for the electrification of the transportation system. Mainly focused on light-duty vehicles\, EVCO also works on the electrification of medium and heavy-duty vehicles such as OC Transpo’s bus fleet. \nOttawa Renewable Energy Co-operative (OREC) – Energy generation has long been centralized\, but the landscape is changing. Meet the Ottawa Renewable Energy Cooperative (OREC) and find out how community funded renewable energy allows individuals to benefit directly from the energy transition and brings more democracy and transparency to electricity generation. With a 14 year track record and a portfolio of 24 renewable energy and 3 energy efficiency projects (and growing)\, OREC strives to ensure locally funded renewable energy assets are an important piece of our journey away from fossil fuels. OREC raises capital through the sale of preference shares. This capital is pooled by the Co-operative to build new or acquire existing projects\, bringing them under community ownership. Revenues from the sale of renewable energy or energy savings are returned to investors in the form of interest payments\, dividends\, and capital repayment. Through its projects\, OREC provides partners\, such as businesses\, school boards\, municipalities and Crown Corporations with predictable electricity prices\, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and all at no upfront cost.

SUMMARY:National Mobilization Against the Arms Trade
DESCRIPTION:Canada’s largest military trade show – CANSEC is happening in Ottawa on May 29th. Join us for a National Mobilization Against the Arms Trade! #shutdowncansec \nMay 29th\n7AM at EY Centre\n12PM Parliament Hill \nCANSEC\, the biggest military trade convention in North America\, will once again be held in Ottawa\, on May 29-30th\, 2024. Join us in protesting and confronting the warmongers gathering to do business with the support of the Canadian government! Let’s get organized in exposing the war profiteers and demanding an independent\, in-depth\, and public inquiry into the activities of CADSI – the government-funded organizer of the military trade show – and its complicity in the ongoing genocide. \nThe weapons and other machinery which will be sold in Ottawa will be used to further corporate interests and murder people across the world. They will be deployed to devastate whole communities. This comes at a time when the Canadian government is committing to further increase its military spending\, putting more money into war while people in Canada are barely able to afford rent and groceries. \n\nWe believe that it is critical that we organize ourselves against those that are not working for our interests. We have more in common with people that are being bombed and killed\, than the ones profiting from it. Let’s stand with movements\, from Palestine to the Philippines\, from Yemen to Wet’suwet’en territory\, struggling against the arms trade\, and protest the military-industrial complex that profits from innocent blood.

SUMMARY:Rally for remote work rights to support stronger communities
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 23\, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is hosting a public breakfast with Treasury Board President Anita Anand\, who recently announced a plan to force workers back to the office three days per week. This announcement followed statements from Ontario Premier Doug Ford and business leaders who deemed this the best strategy to rescue downtown Ottawa’s economy. That’s not a sustainable business model for the downtown core – our city deserves better!\nJoin members of CAPE and other federal unions\, and members and leaders of various Ottawa communities at a peaceful rally at city hall to remind federal\, provincial and municipal elected officials that forcing thousands of federal employees back to insufficient and expensive downtown Ottawa offices more days a week is not viable long-term solution to fix downtown Ottawa’s decades-long economic problems.\nRSVP NOW: https://actionnetwork.org/events/rally-remote-work/\nFederal unions and Ottawa groups rally for remote work and stronger communities!\nWHERE: Ottawa City Hall\, 110 Laurier Avenue West (Laurier entrance).WHEN: Thursday\, May 23\, 7:45 am to 9 am\, rain or shine\n**Hot beverages and morning snacks will be provided**\n\n>>> Let’s be heard! #RemoteWorks!\nTell the mayor that downtown Ottawa should be a vibrant space for everyone who calls Ottawa home\, not a dead employment zone whose economy depends on federal employees’ daily snack expenses from 9 to 5 only. This model was not working before the pandemic and now is the time to reimagine the animated space that our downtown should be!\nCome to promote the benefits of remote work to Canadian taxpayers and to bring attention to the opportunities to convert federal office buildings into housing and other spaces that work for residents and local businesses: daycares\, youth and community centers and so much more!\nDefend businesses and communities outside of Ottawa’s downtown core that have thrived with the increase in remote work. These neighbourhoods deserve a voice and our support!\nTell the president of the Treasury Board that she should not be catering to real estate corporations\, the mayor or Doug Ford to the detriment of federal employees and Ottawa communities.\nShare broadly:\nForward this to your friends\, colleagues and members of your Ottawa communities.Ask your local to distribute it. Share the rally on social media.
