DESCRIPTION:Unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory (Ottawa\, ON) \n\n\nOn March 15\, 2025\, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm\, community members\, advocates\, victims\, and families impacted by police violence will come together at the University of Ottawa for a National Gathering in Honour of the International Day Against Police Brutality. \n\n\nThis event aims to amplify the voices of those affected by police violence\, demand justice for those who have been harmed or lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement\, and share examples of community-led responses to advance social justice and prevent further harm from the police system. The gathering will provide a free community dinner and space to learn\, build solidarity\, heal\, and take collective action. \n\n\nThe event will take place at the Faculty of Social Sciences Building\, Room 1006 (main floor)\, University of Ottawa\, 120 University Private\, Ottawa\, ON\, K1N 9A7. DESCRIPTION:What?\nOrganizing for Water Justice is an experience of learning outside the classroom. Taking place during the week of World Water Day\, please come prepared to engage with our panelists and share in ceremony\, water stories and water justice strategies. Whether you’re already familiar with the topics of water health\, justice and organizing you are guaranteed to learn something new in the event organized by students for students.\n \n\n\nWho?\nJustin Roy (Kebaowek First Nation) – a member of Kebaowek’s Chief and Council\, in his 3rd consecutive 2 year term. He is the Director of Community Development for the Kebaowek First Nation and works to promote the well-being\, self-determination\, and economic growth of his Nation. He advocates for Indigenous rights\, cultural preservation\, protection of all lands\, waters\, and life that make up the nation’s unceded Algonquin territory and governance that reflects the needs and aspirations of his people.  \n\n\nColleen James (Carcross First Nation) – an elder and teacher from the First Nation in the Yukon. The protection of water is a priority for revitalizing Indigenous legal and governance systems in approaches to water governance. While the citizens have governed the waters and lands within their traditional territory since time immemorial\, their Tagish and Tlingit legal orders have been disrupted by colonial forms of governance. Nevertheless\, Colleen will share how the knowledge of these systems endures in practice and oral history. \n \n\n\nPalestinian Youth Movement rep –  a transnational\, independent\, grassroots organization. They will discuss the current water justice issues facing Palestinians in Gaza\, the West Bank and all of occupied Palestine as a result of the ongoing zionist occupation.\n \n\n\nMeera Karunanathan – an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. Her academic work is shaped by many years of experience in environmental and social justice organizing. Building on relationships with feminist\, Indigenous and environmental justice movements\, her research investigates the processes that produce uneven distribution of water in the global South. She supports frontline water justice struggles through research\, advocacy and popular education.

Withers (Simon Fraser University) will present a lecture entitled “Meeting this Moment: Building Disability and Trans Justice Amid Rising Authoritarianism” on March 19\, 2025\, at 6:00 pm.\n\n\n\nThe conference\, moderated by Krys Maki (School of Social Innovation\, Saint Paul University)\, will take place at the Atelier d’innovation sociale Mauril-Bélanger\, 95 Clegg Street\, Ottawa.\n\n\nA.J Withers\nA.J. Withers is the Ruth Wynn Woodward Junior Chair of the Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies Department and an activist and scholar working towards decolonial social justice. Their primary focuses are on issues of homelessness and disability justice. Their latest book\, Fight to Win: Inside Poor People’s Organizing (2021\, Fernwood) is based on homelessness organizing work in Toronto – which they were involved in for about twenty years. They co-authored A Violent History of Benevolence: Interlocking Oppression in the Moral Economies of Social Working\, with Chris Chapman (2019\, University of Toronto Press). This book is an examination of the harms that people who believe they have good intentions cause when they set out to help others/‘the other’. It examines professional social work’s (and non-professionals doing social working) active role in genocide\, white supremacy\, eugenics and cisheteropatriarchy. Their first book is Disability Politics and Theory (2012\, Fernwood) which provides an accessible entry into understanding disability\, ableism and access. They teach courses that centre an intersectional analysis of social justice and examine issues of power\, social relations\, capitalism\, colonialism and social change.

Why did her grandmother Tahira abandon her seven children to follow a man from Karachi to a tiny village in Punjab? And though she eventually left him\, Tahira remained estranged from her children for nearly two decades. Who was she in those years when she was no longer a wife or mother? For Sadiya herself\, uninterested in marriage and children\, the question begets another: What space is available to women who defy cultural expectations? \nThrough her inquiry\, Sadiya discovers what her daadi’s life was like during that separation and she confronts difficult historical truths: the pervasiveness of child marriage\, how Partition made refugees of millions of families like hers\, and how the national freedoms achieved in 1947 did not extend to women’s lives. She sees the threads of this history woven through each generation after\, and finds an unexpected sense of belonging in a culture that\, at first blush\, shuns women for wanting lives of their own. \nSadiya Ansari is a journalist and author based in London. As a sunflower’s growth reaches toward the sun\, so\, she suggests\, is a lover’s growth compelled by the gravitational pull and soul-light of their beloved. Many of these poems are in conversation with other poets and artists\, creating a lineage of call and response. Against a backdrop of terrestrial crisis\, come\, spend your precious minutes in love’s Heliotropia\, where we are magnetized by the unfathomable dark matter of another person\, and know ourselves as celestial bodies flowering in spacetime\, together. \nManahil Bandukwala is a writer and visual artist based in Mississauga and Ottawa\, Ontario. Education for Liberation Collective invites you to a community event about the causes of the deadly overdose epidemic as well as actions we can take to help resolve it. \nFeaturing: \n\nLeila Attar\, organizer\, Overdose Prevention Ottawa\nTanja Vasalic\, harm reduction outreach worker\nAlex Fizzard\, frontline case manager with lived experience\n\nThis panel will challenge many of the myths about the opioid crisis by asking: \n\nWhat are the root causes of drug addiction?\nWhat are the harmful effects of closing safe injection sites?\nHow do evidence-based approaches of harm reduction\, decriminalization\, and safe drug supply work? What concrete actions can we take to support our community members?\n\nWe hope to create a space for honest and nuanced conversation about addiction\, drug use\, and drug policy. Our event will emphasize the need to take action and support local grassroots organizations in solidarity with people who use drugs.

You’re invited to join us! \nFor those of us in the Punch Up Collective\, May Day is one of our favorite holidays\, since it honours the power of ordinary people\, working collectively\, to shape the conditions of our lives. We celebrate it every year. As things get harder and fascism more ascendant globally\, we feel inspired to double down on celebrating and remembering that collective struggle is a source of joy and the way that we win. \nIn previous years in Ottawa\, May Day hasn’t been just a single day but has included many different events\, marches\, celebrations\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual gathering for people who have lost someone or multiple people to suicide and who are loooking to share space with people who have experienced similar circumstances.\nLoss by suicide brings particular griefs related to stigma\, invalidation of the loss\, failure to ‘save’ a loved one\, guilt\, confusion\, anger and more.\nThis is a facilitated drop-in discussion space\, with the purpose of building connection\, skill\, and resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ people navigating end of life in our personal lives and in our communities.\nAttendees are welcome to come with questions\, stories\, or special objects to share with the group.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Ottawa launch of My Thievery of the People\, a short-story collection by former Ottawa resident Leila Marshy. \nMarshy’s distinctive style and untamed strength guides the reader in an electrifying high-wire act through the inner lives of refugees\, queers in love and grief\, wives\, workers\, and so many others fighting their way out from under. \nLeila Marshy is of Palestinian-Newfoundland parentage\, which might explain a lot. She has worked for the Palestine Hospital in Cairo\, the Palestinian Mental Health Association in Gaza\, and Medical Aid for Palestine in Montreal.
