War, Militarism & the Climate Crisis: A Post-Film Open Discussion

September 21 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Monday, September 21 – 6:00PM
Loeb A715,
Carleton University, Ottawa
RSVP

Climate Commons invites you to a special follow‑up event to the Sunday screening of Earth’s Greatest Enemy, the new documentary by Abby Martin, U.S. journalist and host of The Empire Files, that exposes the massive climate and environmental impacts of the American war machine. The screening is being held in recognition of the International Day of Peace, the Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice and the #1000Women campaign for #CareNotWarfare, organized by VOW, WILPF‑Canada, the Raging Grannies Ottawa, and Carleton PIRG. See information below for more details.

The following evening, Monday, September 21, we’ll gather for an open, community‑based discussion to continue unpacking the issues raised in the film. We’re thrilled to be joined by Tamara Lorincz, who will offer a short presentation on the Canadian military’s climate emissions and environmental footprint, military base contamination, and rise of military spending, providing essential context as Canada moves to “rebuild, re‑arm and re‑invest in the Canadian Armed Forces.”

This event is hosted by the War & Climate Reading Group and Carleton PIRG and is open to anyone interested in the intersections of militarism, climate change, peace activism, and environmental justice. Whether you attended the film screening or are simply curious, you’re welcome to join.

Speaker: Tamara Lorincz, PhD, Balsillie School for International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her research is on the climate and environmental impacts of the military. The title of her dissertation is “In the Line of Fire: Military Emissions, the National Security Exemption and NATO Expansion in Climate Governance.” Tamara has a Law degree and MBA specializing in environmental law and management from Dalhousie University. She’s a former Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Environmental Network and co-founded the East Coast Environmental Law Association. She’s a senior researcher with the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and a member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She’s a fellow with the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute. Her profile is here.
