Rallies of Allies for Court Support – Solidarity with Kebaowek
The Federal Court of Appeal will hear our case on October 8– the first major test of Canada’s UNDRIP Act, following the decision of Justice Blackhawk. The Kebaowek First Nation has recently achieved two major victories in Federal Court: in February, Justice Julie Blackhawk ruled that the CNSC had failed its constitutional duty to consult and ordered renewed consultations under UNDRIP; and in March, Justice Russel Zinn found that CNL had violated the Species at Risk Act by failing to assess alternative sites for the NSDF, thereby endangering numerous species.
Rather than comply with these rulings, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) have chosen to appeal, showing disregard for reconciliation and the rule of law.
This fight is bigger than one Nation. The Ottawa River is a shared lifeline for Quebec, Ontario, and beyond. More than 140 municipalities have already passed resolutions supporting Kebaowek’s efforts. Now, it is time to amplify our united voice and make clear that this project has no social license.
Your presence will help demonstrate that communities, civil society, and leaders across sectors stand firm: protecting water, biodiversity, and Indigenous rights is non-negotiable.
From 12:00 PM till 2:00 PM (ET), a rally of citizens and allies will be held in front of the Court of Appeal to show strong public support for Kebaowek and to highlight the risks the project poses to the Ottawa River, drinking water, public health, and Indigenous rights. We invite you to stand with us with banners in solidarity.
