Night School: Latin American Sci-Fi

August 10, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Despite the lack of science fiction in the Latin American film industry, there are some overlooked exceptions that silently appeared during the bloodiest years of censorship. This lecture will focus on Argentine science fiction from the 60s and the parallels between the use of science fiction motifs and Argentine history. Explore how this genre uses the dialectics of Latino identity as a means of questioning and resisting an environment of constant socio-political terror, and what contemporary sci-fi can learn from these origins.

Speaker

Daniel Rojas is a Peruvian filmmaker and researcher from the Lima coast, currently residing in Toronto, Canada. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Audiovisual Communication from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. He recently successfully defended his thesis “Bring on the Apocalypse: Nostalgia and Tragedy in Hugo Santiago’s Aquilea” and obtained a Master of Arts in Film Studies from Carleton University. Daniel has dedicated his career to the study of the history of science fiction as a political genre, focusing on non-Hollywood sci-fi, and especially, Latin American science fiction films since the arrival of the Cinématographe to the South.
